Thread regarding Juniper Networks Inc. layoffs

Layoffs in IT

I was one of the folks who was impacted by the recent layoffs. Majority of those who were let go were hardworking knowledgeable SMEs who added a lot of value to Juniper and had been there for 5-10 years. The CIO who likes to surround herself with Yes people used the opportunity to get rid of dissenters and prop the growth of the incompetent clowns that she has brought in or plans to get.

App dev went to a functional guy and the technical team now reports into someone who has zero technical skills and is more of a people micro manager. The existing teams are angry, lost and rudderless and majority plan to look outside.

IT will spend millions of dollars on external consultants like Bain and Metis who will now provide guidance on the new operating model.

Advice to existing folks. Either fall in line or you will be replaced by new folks who are already in the CIO's pipeline. This appliea across all levels.

Advice to the CEO. You are losing control of the company fast and no wonder the stock is stuck between 25-30 over all these years. Juniper will continue to hemmorage good people under this weak leadership. Clean up house now and don't use DEI as an excuse to hire incompetent jokers.

Good luck to those who left or are left behind.

@2qko "John Chambers at Nile will be overtaking you in a few years". Nile itself is a pile of nothing. It is in-and-out an Indian sweatshop. Even their "AI" is a cheap wrapper around Open AI API working as a chat bot. With cancelled federal grants for schools, Nile is toast. Senile Insecure pile of rubbish. With Sri Hoaskote sitting on top of it.

With the abundance of talent now in the market due to layoffs at other companies, is the CIO still hiring her minions from Tibco & Good Harbor Group? Some things never change. Kickbacks, eh?

I was one of the long-timers hit after years of big bonuses, raving reviews, and a lot of great times. The kiss of death came for me when I challenged my VP. I was respectful and bent over backwards to be kind about it, but our relationship was strained for the four months prior to getting laid off. During one of my last weekly reviews, it was obvious to me that my manager was coerced into creating an alternate reality about my work - this after years of sterling weekly reviews and great camaraderie between us right up to that day. He was suddenly distant, argumentative and surprisingly provocative - obviously asked by our VP to take this position with me. Then came the axe with the minimal severance package. Pretty sad for a company that I had always held in such great respect.

A lot of the people laid off makes no sense. Most with many years of experience and well-respected. I imagine they can hire 4 people in Bangalore to what I was earning. Can't hold this against them - apparently, it's just the way of doing business of trying to stay in the black, as painful as this decision was for so many. Work is always for sale, so will just need to brush up the resume and start looking again. Good luck to those who remain, at least until Q124.

Or you could be one of the 20 year employees just entering retirement age as I was with the minimal 60 days severance... Years of sterling job reviews, big bonuses, and then the axe. Best years of my working life totally wasted. At least I got a thank you, but it's difficult not to be bitter; I loved my job and the people I was privileged to work with. Birth, school, work, death... I suppose I can't hold this against them. Best of luck to those who remain - for now, anyway...

This is not a real restructuring exercise.

It's a calculated move to remove those who dare to expose the incompetence of this IT leadership. We've suffered three and a half years of not only witnessing zero contributions but also endured a series of failed ideas and initiatives that have wasted millions and millions of dollars.

What's left of the IT department will soon be populated by the servile followers of the CIO, and they will undoubtedly continue draining $$$ and make life measurable for others. God forbid if the 'future' initiatives fail with no JTO to blame this time they will undoubtedly find a scapegoat, someone like Metis, or other partners or other IT members, to throw under the bus.

By the time (if ever) the board and the CEO come to terms with this reality, they'll be off to their next venture, repeating the same cycle, all thanks to their lie filled deceitful external branding. That is why they invest so much time outside, and the CEO buys into the illusion that they can sell into the CIO land.

Expect nothing good out of unchecked incompetence and arrogance. Make the right choice for your family and career.

A company’s very existence is to make money. People are a resource just like anything else a company uses to make a product that someone buys. To believe any company cares about the human resource so much so to the detriment of a company is naive at best. Corporate values are the rose tinted glasses they make you wear so you feel good about your choice to join which ever company. You are always being weighed and measured for value, like the sheet metal on their products. When the company believes they can get better value somewhere/somehow else, you are gone/replaced.

By making these posts, you have stepped on the snake's tail. Expect the snake to retaliate, Things are going to get worse from this point onwards, you will get more stressed, lose your mental balance and finally be out of job as part of the second wave. Management doesn't care about you and you are a commodity for them. The concern that they show for you is all fake. Good luck.

For the past 20 years of my career, I've consistently managed my workload without feeling overwhelmed. However, in the last week, the management style has led to increased mental pressure. It's become apparent that seeking a change might be the best course of action to prioritize my mental well-being and cultivate a more peaceful life moving forward.

Competence, humility, contribution and accountability will always win, notwithstanding any temporary setbacks.

Moreover you will be able to look at your kids' eyes and they will know you are not a fraud.

Just heard that IT management has traveled to India in business class from US and also staying in fancy hotels under the guise of meeting team members post reorg. While leadership lectures others to spend money judiciously, this guideline does not apply to them. This is very infuriating.

This IT management doesn't care about Juniper but only about themselves. They feel that they can do anything and get away with it. Let it be hiring, promotions, etc. There are absolutely no checks and balances. They are having a gala time at the expense of Juniper. The Juniper Way is dead. The rot runs deep.

My previous manager was not perfect, but he was good. He was technical, understood my issues and was a very good listener who tried to help. Importantly, he was extremely competent. He was laid off last week.

I was put under someone who is clueless and I don't see any way this is going to work or help me in my career. I was already very stressed before and feel that this will lead to depression. I have two young kids and don't want this to impact my family life. Planning to put in my papers this month. Done with this place.

A few years ago I left Cisco and was so encouraged by what I saw in Juniper. Now we are no better than the week leadership and useless HR I saw at Cisco that pretend to care about people, but just use them to increase the bottom line. John Chambers at Nile will be overtaking us in a few years as they seem to be building their company on the values Cisco and Juniper once had. I wasn't impacted by the layoff but I going to be looking to move to Nile anyways. I should have saw this coming!!! I did, but I chose to ignore it, but no longer! It is not too late and I hope to be out of this mess at Juniper soon.

What I do still see here at Juniper that was lacking at Cisco is some Sr people willing to stand up for people and do what is right, where the Cisco employees have generally become spineless and believe the lies the SLT continue to promote. I have a little more hope for Juniper if we get new leadership, but I'm not willing to stick around to find out. I hope to say goodbye to Juniper soon. If Nile culture and values stick, and I think they will knowing Chambers, they will be the future of networking! Juniper and Cisco will slowing be sinking in the Nile!

Best wishes and lots of success in whatever you intend to do next. You deserve it.

Thank you for the overwhelming response to my OP. I am humbled by the comments and grateful for the wishes. My final advice is

  1. Do not trust anyone from the management team or who they get in. It's all one head.
  1. Take your time, upskill and look outside. Juniper is in a slow death spiral given the competency of the exec leadership here. Chances of improvement are slim. There will be more downs than ups.
  1. Don't think that it won't happen to you. It's just a matter of time. You are a commodity for them and will be discarded at a convenient time.
  1. Hope that GMP gets promoted soon. That is a vacuum that'll continue to su-k everyone else's portfolios until getting promoted.

Good luck and hopefully see you on the other side.

Having your star performers who have worked here for more than 10 years, to ask them to handover their belongings and vacate within 5 minhtes is totally disrespectful and shows what kind of a shithole company Juniper has become. The Juniper Way is a fraud perpetrated on the masses and doesn't apply to leadership.

Leave before you are impacted in the second wave. The lists are already drawn. It's just a matter of time.

Currently, the CIO is on a mission to assist individuals from TIBCO and StrataFusion, including herself among those with less successful track records. None of them have a history of past successes. I'm not sure why they've been given the opportunity to stay here for so long. Is anyone monitoring their performance?

There is a list of their people that they want to get. It doesn't matter if you are a star performer or a yes guy. They will find ways to get you out and get in their person. You are always going to be a second class citizen, how much ever you su-k up to them. These folks can't be trusted.

The interviews for their people are nearly non-existent & managers under them are and will be forced to hire their cronies.

HR at Juniper is totally worthless and will do their bidding. You might be out of a job soon if you still continue drinking their Kool aid. So start getting your resume in order, contacting your network and looking out. Do not make the same mistake that I did.

Unfortunate to see what IT has devolved into under new leadership. I left after the disastrous outsourcing to IBM. It seems that the downhill trend continues with no bottom in sight.

CIO exhibits classic narcissistic tendencies. Talks all the time, very poor listener, eventually does what she wants. More active on LinkedIn and networking outside all the time.

IT is a pigsty of dysfunction and incompetence. Setup for potential failure.

If the management is relying on external consulting firms to tell on how to run a firm, it itself tells how incompetent they are. I guess all the dislikes in this thread are from the 4 top management people. LOL.

Hiring 20 more FTE? Are they insane? They just let go of their main architect who knew everything. Looks like they will eventually cut existing heads to make way for these. Well, that answers my question.

Agree with OP. CIO always seemed moody, agitated and in a screaming match with someone or the other. Got the vibe that she hated men especially people of color. She and her cronies have created a very toxic work environment. The CISO was a good guy. Am in a much better place now.

Glad to have taken my bonus and left a few months ago. No growth opportunities. Raised my concerns with HR who said that they couldn't do anything and to work with my manager. Management tries to be nice but will turn around and throw you under the bus at the first opportunity. Lot of nepotism & favoritism within IT. Quite frustrating.

Surprised that the CIO & the JTO head are still there after massively screwing up the big transformation program. Guess Juniper rewards incompetence.
