Thread regarding IBM layoffs

My father's lay off.

I just received a call today from my mother telling me that IBM laid off my father after 36 years of donating his blood sweat and tears to these scumbags. All they did to this poor man over time is screw him, and screw him some more. First they cut his wages, then took his overtime away and now cut this man's job after 36 years of loyalty and never using sick time. SHAME ON YOU SCUMBAGS. Ginny Rometty is the biggest scumbag of them all as she lays in her 45 million dollar net worth and sending the jobs of hard working people to india, brazil, and wherever else. This needs to stop. It ruins families of the people that started this company and built it up to the powerhouse it was. My father started there in 1980. He basically worked there for blood money. Unbelievable. They say he "MAY" be able to work for a vendor. after his one month of severance and three months until he's actually gone. We need to stick up against this. My fathers birthday was May 11th now eight days later he is fired from these scumbags. if anyone wants to talk more please email me at axt10@yahoo.com. It needs to be made aware of how IBM screws over employees and how it hurts families...... I'll say it again..... 36 years he has been there and this is the respect this 61 year old man gets. WOW! complete BS from you GINNI. But us little people you could care less about. Just keep running IBM into the ground you scumbag. Just don't bring down the hard workers that made that damn company.

I'm visiting over here from the Intel layoff.com board...we're going through the same thing over there (mass layoffs of mostly older workers, H1B Visas galore coming on board for years, extremely low morale, etc.). Very sad to see this happening and I don't even know how to advise my children other than to not go into engineering and work on a degree that isn't as quickly importable. After 20 years @ Intel I took the seperation package under threat of being let go if I didn't...at least I got about 9 months of pay. I will be posting your Sara Blackwell suggestions over there. Thank you for posting that! Maybe we can turn this around, if not for us, for our children.

Sara Blackwell ( http://Theblackwellfirm.com ) is in the forefront of fighting against (1) H1B Visa abuse and (2) Companies shipping jobs overseas.

Part of what she is doing involves the EEOC ( https://www.eeoc.gov ).

Call her and she will provide you with information. She spent a good 20 minutes with me going over what she is doing and my options with IBM. Her dealings are not specific to IBM, but to the plight of of ALL Americans whose jobs are being taken away.

There is no guarantee of anything coming out of this, but she is drawing attention to our plight.

Check her out on youtube. Here she is on FOX Business - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reX04kc9bvI

Good luck to us all.

What a lot of people don't know is that most of the folks being laid off have what IBM calls "Future Health Account". When IBM took away our pension plan in mid 2000's, IBM stopped contributing to this fund and it grew only with minimal interest. It is my understanding if your age and years of service equal less than 75, you lose that money. Who gets it? The executives in the pool! Multiply the number of IBMérs laid off times a minimum of 35K in each account.......My colleague of many years was just laid off in March's bloodbath. His 41K is lost because he didn't meet that requirement.

The largest punch to the gut came about in January when Ginny and her cronies cut the longstanding severance package of 2 weeks of pay for each year of service with a cap of 26 weeks - with ONE MONTH severance. Every year as the layoffs come and go me and my IBM colleagues quip "atleast we have six months severance!" I can understand signing a separation agreement for six months pay and walking away quietly....but not for one month.

Morale is at an all time low. I doubt if IBM can dig themselves out of this unless Ginny & Company remain to decimate what is left.

I was dumped last summer. 63 yrs old ..20+ yrs of service .. No 'real' pension ( lost that when the rules changed in 1999) nothing matters to them! Everyone let go in the past two decades were top performers. We gave our heart to the company. Age discrimination? You betcha!! I am struggling to make it to MediCare and full Social Security. Heartless, disloyal, disgusting people at the top, devastating those who made IBM! It's a joke when they say yes we are cutting but there are thousands of available jobs on our website. Bull!

It is heartbreaking to see what Ginni is doing to this company. They have plenty of cash so the layoffs are not required. But the current team only cares about quarterly earnings and is prepared to sacrifice the future to make their numbers so they can collect their bonuses. My daughter was just hired by IBM a year ago. She wasn't laid off but she sees what is happening and knows now what kind of company she works for

I work there and a few friends got laid off today. From what I have seen it's older workers some there for decades. It's a shame. No one feels safe and morale is low.

Let go today, 22 years with the company, over 60. I was not surprised, the company lost its soul long time ago.
