Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Feeling Guilty for taking mandatory USA thanksgiving holiday off

Anyone feel like your team makes you feel guilty that holidays coming up and the work continues. Since its a global bank, other regional teammates don't care and all these holidays do is set delay your work by one day and forces a tighter deadline. I cant relax thinking that and all the floating variables that goes with these projects. Add the uncertainty of layoffs and it just adds more stress rather than relax with family. I know I will be thinking about my blockers and possible layoff talk before the end of the year rather than spend time with my family. I never felt like that before in other companies. Citi this year really made me feel this way.

Must be a manager who is not sensitive to the needs of others.

I also want to add, things will not change on this team. It continues with this imbalance and always high stress load. Its just to tolerate this situation more until the job market opens back up next year. At the moment, jobs hiring is on freeze for the holidays. Its just tolerate until an opportunity comes up to make the next moves, or i get laid off. Who knows. The remaining of the year at Citi seems to be a wildcard.

Its not a troll post. I genuinely feel this way on this team. Most of my team is overseas and I am the only developer in America. Its very hard to keep up with the team when they have collaboration and you always feel behind on the team since they know the system better than you. I get work tasks that gets me to work in silo, or have late meetings to sync up with Shanghai team. Add to this work pressure of getting things done asap and adding pressure from the boss stating why is it not done yet? Everyone gatekeeps their niche knowledge in the group. So its just survival. Most days I am burned out and cannot think. There not much downtime. Its sprint after sprint. I am in the software developer role.

I wish it was sarcasm. I do believe its also not setting boundaries early. I also worked myself out so I can survive layoffs, but a friend recently advised me that it doesnt matter. If they are going to lay me off, they are going to do it. Doesnt matter if you ki-l yourself working for them. And take up the advise from that random poster about setting boundaries.

I did get a little recharge from that one day off I took on thursday. Its not enough, I feel like I need at least a week of just reset in my life to feel better. One step at a time.

+3 The OP is a troll and/or being sarcastic. I feel as much guilt about NOT working and checking emails during the Thanksgiving Holiday as CEO Insane Jane feels guilty about taking her Undeserved salary increase and bonus.....= ZERO Guilt .

I don't feel guilty at all. I didn't check emails during my 4 days off and nobody else should have either. It's a time to relax and enjoy family time. I agree. You need to set boundaries. Block off your hour of lunch everyday on your calendar. Block of some time weekly to sharpen your skills and block off stuff to set boundaries on the number of meetings per day.

Our SMTs in tech said that the restructuring was/is only about cutting headcount. Not what we are telling the media about "simplification".

Soooo they don't give a cr-p about you why give two Fs about what the think of you taking holiday or sick time.

Why? India has so much public holidays and I don't think they feel guilty taking time off

He-l no. Thanksgiving is my time to be with family. Citi or no other company will make me feel obligated to work.
That's on no one but YOU feeling that way. It's called boundaries. If you can't set them for yourself, damn straight, someone else will. Don't let your job control your life. Sorry, but it sounds like you're looking for a way to blame Citi because you don't know how to set boundaries for yourself. It's called having a spine, regardless!

Upper MD’s are counting on your desperation. They want you so desperate to keep your job that you do in fact feel guilty anytime you do anything other than work. You are playing into their hands. The way you feel right now, is exactly where they want you.
