Agree. While VMW is hitting $12B, peer companies like Salesforce are hitting $20B.

@5oej+1f3s2TeD - Workstation as Enterprise solution .. sarcasm aside. No point looking at earning because it does not reflect the excessive overheads. I think you might actually misunderstood earning vs net profit/income. Look at the net profit based on quarterly view, it is actually showing some signs of dipping south since 2019. Too much deadweight executives doing nothing and pulling in their own friends in to do nothing as well. Org merge is a sign of duplication of roles. While these executives being paid very well, company trying to watch out for the wallet too, starting to increase headcount, starting hiring on low cost centers and churning out low quality works. Works used to be sorted out by a single highly knowledgeable engineer now not being able to solve by a few. Customers starting to realize and look for alternatives. However, there are more people now that before. You see how the company eating itself out from within? If considering inflation, Comparing to other successful companies that VMWare always try to associate with, VMW is doing pretty poorly. So, it is matter of how you look at performance. VMW is doing OK. Next couple years will show more direction of where it is heading to.

I get your point (you forgot SlideRocket). But looking at the company growth since 2009 @ $2B, the company has doubled its earnings twice and is ahead of target for the third doubling.
2009 - $2B
2012 - $4B (3 years elapsed)
2018 - $8B (6 years elapsed)
2021 - $12B (4 years elapsed)
If that performance holds, they'll hit $16B by 2025.
My point is, mistakes aside (like every company makes), they must be doing some things right.

  • MyVMware / Customer Connect - always available, always stable, and you can bet the life of your firstborn on the accuracy of the data.
  • Pricing and Packaging processes have always been world-class, yet very simple and easy for customers to digest.
  • The intersection of VMware Sales, Deal Desk, and Legal is the most harmonious and frictionless point of the entire universe.
  • The many Remote File Storage and Sharing (RFSS) platforms such as Sharepoint, Teams, etc. that IT has rolled out and then rolled back up over the years have all been easy to use and very reliable.
  • Zimbra, anyone?
  • But obviously the greatest internal process and system of them all was the one that Pat G., Sanjay, and Raghu have used over the years to evaluate, acquire, and integrate other companies.
