Trump vowed to ease regulations on fossil-fuel cars and roll back what he called President Joe Biden’s EV mandate.
The transition team also recommends imposing tariffs on all battery materials globally, a bid to boost U.S. production, and then negotiating individual exemptions with allies, the document shows.
The team also calls for eliminating the Biden administration’s $7,500 tax credit for consumer EV purchases, a plan that Reuters first reported last month.


This will 100%, guaranteed change the product mix offered by General Motors.
The big 3 can't make a profit on electric vehicles without the subsidies, aka corporate welfare. They have already demonstrated that they refuse to invest in the infrastructure. THE GRIFT IS OVER!
At the very basic level, if you are on a team that works on EV software or hardware, including vehicle design you can count on being moved to another team or cut.
I don't think every EV project will be cut. The next Bolt EV & Equinox are mass-appeal projects with higher expected sales numbers; probably safe. Everything else is suspect.

If Mary & Company proceed as if the subsidies aren't cut... expect bigger failure, bigger stock price drops, more misery. I don't think they want to risk that stock price though...

It doesn't matter how Elon feels. What does matter to GM and it's employees is that the government is not going to force EVs on people. That's a big problem for our future since the upcoming portfolio is EV-centric. GM management will either pivot, or we go down with the ship.

I laugh when I hear how clean an EV is. Finished product, sure, but do some research on what it took to produce that battery. I have done much research on this after hearing a comment, and it is true. It takes multiple times the amount of carbon with the machines used digging and mining the lithium, cobalt, alum, etc than it does for the mining of fossil fuel for ICE vehicles. The report I read said this>

You will have to drive your EV nonstop for 8 years to break even with an ICE vehicle carbon output. People forget we are still stripping the earth of resources that are still not an endless supply and takes much more materials and mining to produce that clean EV. Look at the big picture not the finished product.

Struggling electric van startup Canoo has placed its remaining employees on what it’s calling a “mandatory unpaid break” through at least the end of the year, according to an email obtained by TechCrunch.

The company told employees they are being locked out of Canoo’s systems at the end of the day Friday, according to the email. It said benefits would last through the end of December.

The email comes just a few days after the company announced it was furloughing nearly 100 employees and idling an assembly facility in Oklahoma due to lack of funding. It’s unclear how many remained following those cuts. The company and CEO Tony Aquila did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Canoo is rounding out a rough year. It recently closed the Los Angeles office that used to serve as its headquarters. It has lost a lot of executives, including its chief technology officer, chief financial officer, and general counsel. The company reported in mid-November that it had just $700,000 in the bank.

"No one wants EVs" and "China will sell so many EVs without tariffs that we'll all get laid off" can't both be true.

We can remove tariffs on Chinese EVs when the Chinese stops subsidizing battery production and the China auto companies. The main reason those cars are so cheap is because the companies are operating at a loss and the China government is propping them up. Unfair labor practices are also being used.

And you have to consider what would happen to your job without Tariffs. If these subsidized China EVs are allowed to be imported with no intervention, the US automakers would have to respond with massive cost cuts. In other words major layoffs or wage/benefit cuts. So be careful what you wish for. Free trade is okay but when it’s done honestly and a level playing field.

Haha - Mary and Mark aren’t exactly victims here. There never was a high demand for EVs in the US but they were banking on EVs being forced down consumers throats. That strategy rarely works. They also panicked seeing Tesla market share take off in the short term but ignoring the long term projections. In addition GM leaders have always had the attitude they know better than the customer. Again, a consistent mistake of arrogance at GM.

This is on Mark, Mary and the Board for pi-s poor decision making. Other auto companies like Toyota knew better and resisted heavy EV investment because they listened to the customer. That’s something GM should take note of and learn from.

That’s like saying Assad in Syria wasn’t a really bad person….

Those 2 basically sc--wed up GM. They basically went and trashed GM’s ICE programs because they said EV’s are GM’s future.

Now that the tables are being flipped, both of them are looking back at the island far away, trying to figure out how to get back to square one.

What really su-ks…especially in China, GM is losing the EV war with the Chinese companies. GM, like Stellantis and Ford, are seeing they can’t compete.

With taking 5 Billion in charges, I wouldn’t be surprised if GM decides to end its venture with SAIC motors.

The Chinese EV companies already have flooded the Mexican market with their cars.

There's a tracker that tracks the top 100 companies receiving subsidies from the U.S. Government. General Motors is #4, having received $7.5 BILLION. Ford was #3 with $7.7 billion. Once people start to understand the wasteful government spending and how it drives inflation they will (hopefully) rail against it. But there's another issue. Once this happens, automotive companies will need to make and sell great cars to make money without corporate welfare. Can they?

Mary and Mark didn't do anything wrong - the end of EV subsidies is an external issue. There's no need to kiss anything.
What they will need to do: Present a series of solutions to counter the price increase.

That could involve:
Platform sharing, modular design, partnerships with competitors (historically Toyota and Honda), less complex engineering (we have that initiative now), global sourcing, select lower cost materials, supply chain optimization, cheaper powertrains, cheaper trim & options on the cars, etc. Can you tell I work in engineering?

GM can manufacture low-cost cars or luxury cars. We can create expensive looking cars that are mid-tier cost. There are a whole host of things we can do if there are ample resources and a good plan.

That will not happen in an atmosphere of layoffs, fear, and intimidation. Employees will always react to that by calling in, making excuses, quitting, causing problems, dragging their feet, etc. GM management will get what they deserve for it but it's all a shame because it doesn't have to be this way. We have the talent, the intellectual property, the resources... we just need great management that values all of this and executes well. We are not seeing it and TBH I doubt we will. Not sure if you have seen the changes in management lately... I'll just leave it for you to ponder.

They save more money employing someone overseas than they do paying someone with an H2.

No matter what he says, he'll never cut h1 or h2 programs.

It's not about labor shortages, as advertised, but about cheap labor.

What’s really funny, Trump is considering significantly reducing the H2 program.

If that is the case, there is going to be a horde of people dropping dung in their britches because if they get cut, they will only have a certain of amount of time to find another job before facing deportation.

Time to stop larping as a tech company and get back to building vehicles the public wants and can afford. Getting bought up by Apple or Google or Gordon Gekko or whoever they were hoping for didn’t happen. Or maybe it’s time to merge with Ford and get back to having a decent market share while eliminating product redundancy. All China ever promised was cheap(er) supplier components in exchange for handing them all of our technical resources. Being those jobs back home so our children have opportunities instead of global competitors.
