Store manager fired for asking sick employee for diagnosis

A Illinois store manager has been fired for asking an employee not only for a doctors note but for a diagnosis, the store manager was in clear violation of HIPPA laws, she was terminated after she admitted to asking the 66 year old employee for it. Allegedly the manager also asked another employee for the phone number to their doctors office.

HIPPA deals with medical issues and release period. The person may have been let go but not for asking for a diagnosis. Some folks believe anything.

Now before posters get high and mighty, you have had a co-worker go for a test or be out sick. You saw them a couple of days later and asked them 'what happened' or something similar. You didn't get canned did you?

No it doesn't matter that the person was a store manager that asked the question or the 'why' she asked the question. A federal law would still apply in either case wouldn't it?

If a person was on a leave (FMLA) there are certain questions you would not be able to ask if the person reported to you. IF you did you will not receive and answer and that's the end of that discussion. In addition if you have ever had people report to you, you would not risk employment or professionalism by asking silly questions

Hippa deals with medical insurance and release……. not asking someone a diagnosis; although yes technically asking for a doctors note in the store is against company policy.

It baffles me how many people complains on this site has the most incorrect information or analysis, but out of it all still choose to work for a company.

Some of the call outs are legit- but not many fashion companies are in better standings than Macy’s. Many of the complainers wouldn’t last in other retailers because of how lax we are and you all know it. Stop complaining
