Thread regarding VISA Inc. layoffs

IMPORTANT - RTO and mass layoffs coming to UK/US

If you reading this and still employed at Visa, you probably aware news came out today. Not only that, as I had the privilege to overhear a conversation from an VP, in which the context of the new RTO policy is to drive employment costs lower and eliminate as most excess positions as possible within the organization. The execution is in warming up everyone with 3 days a week RTO, layoff those with "high standards" that will refuse to abide by the so called "rules" to then hire cheaper and do a second round for the full RTO schedule back to 5 days (hopefully not including weekends for those poor souls on shift). Two people in my team already preparing to resign this month.

People, make provisions, act now and save yourselves from the bloodshed of this corporation greed.

Else accept to be slaves stuck in overtime and obsolete compensation margins that will barely catch up with inflation.

Depending on your department manager and it is not normally enforced. Office still empty in Foster City and generally very lax

RTO is being measured by badge contact on way into office. Similar dashboards to before with weekly and monthly stats per team and site, with now granular data at employee level.
It's a performance issue if you don't meet you figures and I'm guessing this is going to be used like last year's ratings cull.

Being measured on every statistic is going to be the norm.

I simply cannot wrap my head around VISA lay-offs. The Company has more then 50% profit. Why is it laying off people? Greed at the top.

RTO does not include people who are "Remote" category. You are SAFE :)

I hate to burst your bubble. No one is truly safe. I, along with others, were Remote with S/S performance reviews were affected in the mid-November layoff. You won't have to RTO if you don't have a job.

Does anyone know what the data looks like that the VPs can view? Broken down by day or hours or ?

RTO policy requires employees to be in the office three days a week—Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday—unless there are capacity issues in certain locations. That said, enforcement has varied, with some VPs being more flexible as long as work gets done. This new announcement is expected to tighten the policy and ensure it’s applied more consistently across the organization.

3x a week is still very reasonable. Many companies are going back to in office 5 days a week so we are fortunate.

HR conducted a meeting with people leaders about the RTO directive. Based on feedback from my manager, HR adhered to the talking points outlined in their web portal. In response to inquiries not answered by the portal or requests for exceptions, HR advised managers to talk to their VPs. Only VPs have access to the adherence numbers, which means that managers have little visibility into compliance.

HR said the responsibility for enforcement lies with people leaders but again did not explain. Probable consequences would be verbal warnings, poor performance evaluations, or termination for continued non-compliance.

I heard the same thing here in Singapore. Those not RTO x3 per week will face consequences, regardless family or health status. Highly likely they will issue warning letters, leading to bad annual review and potentially termination.

The info I got, from a senior person on my office, is to expect consequences if not going to the office 3x a week.

At this time was still unclear to him if is just warmings, bonus/salary penalties or if will escalate to contract termination due to breach of contract. At our office we have people that are ignoring the current RTO, and was make absolutely clear that after April they will be consequences.

In the past it was 2-3 days in office with Alternate days to work from home. It was NEVER enforced despite that HR will turn over ID badge logs to their supervisors. Some managers allowed people to work from India more than 60 days no questions ask. Some claim they could not come office because miss company shuttle, do not have transportation or could not find a caregiver to take care of family member and the list goes on and on. These people are the LUCKY ones and they still SAFE. Still a Great and few "Caring place" to be

It’s been in office 3 days a week for a few years now so this is not new.

Beginning month of April YOU are expected to be in OFFICE 3 days a week no more alternate days. Not bad compared to other companies like JP Morgan you are expected to be in office 5 days a week :)

The whole thing is just insanity. The company is making record profits and the share price has never been higher. Everyone I know is working hard and doing great.

Why are they trying to frighten and intimidate employees

Visa is quiet firing, or silent firing, a practice where employers discretely encourage employees to resign as a lot of the roles have been moved to Poland and the US. There is a lot less senior leadership presence in UK as these are moving abroad.

I know for sure people with full remote allowances on their contracts should be safe. Some managers are making moves to BS and protect employees too. There are ongoing discussions about mobilization on other companies, so we will see how it goes. The advice is to try and survive the most as we can, as always. Nothing is guaranteed.

Leaving for a better and more transparent position is probably the best you can all do.

what about for those who are fully remote approved by hiring manager and department HR? I know two colleagues who are BOTH FULLY REMOTE for over 10 years. I even know an EA who is fully remote and his boss a VP comes to the office unpacking supplies, snacks, catering for his team?

Visa already quietly laid off about 2,000 workers in December. Me and many on my team being among those laid off. This now makes more sense considering many of us were remote and working in innovative areas.

However, many of us also possess critical niche knowledge that is difficult to hire (LLM, AI, Web3, ML). It is also interesting considering these areas are rapidly growing and essential for long-term growth. Visa’s decision to be conservative rather than innovate and push boundaries is disappointing.
