Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Pearson lay offs, are we next?

Pearson laid off 150+ people on Wednesday. There are meetings scheduled for some people Thursday at Cengage. Are we getting laid off soon? Anyone have any inside news they can share?

@3wao+15pFHP4p The marketing execs have to justify their ridiculously bloated salaries somehow.

one bogus idea among the Cengage gliteratti (there are so many) is that brand loyalty toward a publisher is a thing. No one cares or even knows who publishes the books they want or need to read. Cengage is not on any kind of cutting edge. No one here is almost famous.

It’s important to remember that no job is safe at Cengage. Or at any company, in any industry. Ever. Never has been. Always have a resume at the ready, 6 months living expenses saved (at minimum), and an exit strategy.

Anyone who thinks their job is safe either hasn’t worked at Cengage long enough or isn’t paying any attention.

We should all breathe a sigh of relief that layoffs weren't mentioned in the meeting.. Cengage is certainly professional, ethical, and transparent regarding layoffs. If Hansen was anymore transparent he'd be Invisible! They would certainly not do anything like sending mass emails to employees out of the blue, telling them to report to HR to be terminated. That would be so out of character!

Seems like we might be safe for the summer.

Seems like layoffs did not happen during 10am meetings, given the lack of comments on the matter. Good for employees! Will be interesting to learn what Hansen & company have to say next Thursday.

@sck+15pFHP4p "Heard it here first" . . . ?

LOL, C'gage has been pulling the "fire the expensive people" for ten years now, son - you are literally the LAST (or rather the latest) person to share this observation.

Much of your readership in fact once were those better-paid Cengagers who are now back to making an enjoyable wage at relevant, thriving companies. Some are even being well-paid by competitors and giggling at the sales & marketing revolving-door pollyannas that Cengage now pushes out there to serve as "competition."

To the Twitter searcher, yes - students hate all of the Big Three equally. They already have to wrestle around with Blackboard and Canvas, they don't want to have to pay for and wrestle with your difficult tech, too. Heck, most students don't even want to READ these days. Making them pay for the privilege of wrestling around with your broken technology and impossible customer service is not exactly going to earn you a lot of love as a Cengage employee, and it certainly isn't helping students to learn, despite Hansen's hollow, feel-good mantras.

I did a search of ‘Cengage’ in twitter as suggested. Then did one of McGraw Hill and Pearson. Didn’t notice any difference.

Cwngage let’s go of the highest paid, keeps the lower/lowest as a matter of bottom line. Nothing personal, and I hate to say it. Marketing, and Sales are the easiest ones to cut. Think of what “perks” you are offered, couple that with a higher salary, you will be first to go. The savings (car, gas, maintenance, bonus you will be paid for HITTING goal... That was our basis in November, that is our basis now. Cengage only keeps the “best”, no, we let them go because we can’t afford them. Heard it hear first, folks.

@lvx+15pFHP4p Do a search of "Cengage" on Twitter sometime. That will let you know what the actual customers actually think about the product.

@nrr+15pFHP4p This may be the greatest and truest post ever. I bet that same person has some BS on their linkedin profile like "I love learning."

Guess what ? As a the parent of a college age kid who has friends over frequently, your students "can't stand you." Actually, they they don't even know you exist. You and your products are completely irrelevant to them, except when they use every resource at their disposal not to purchase them.

@kdn+15pFHP4p Yes, it's a rumors site. I don't think anyone claimed to have inside knowledge of impending layoffs. The prediction was made based on the panicked-sounding investor call that was held in addition to the fiscal year call being delayed by an unreasonable amount of time. Given all the events that have occurred over the past few months (failed merger, continued revenue losses, COVID crisis, new COO taking over) I don't think it is unreasonable to think that layoffs, office closures and/or a major restructuring are coming. It's just a matter of when, which no one on this site knows.

Laughing so unbelievably hard at the person offended by the term talent. Classic example of today's typical Cengage employee. Absolutely zero understanding of business or the real world. I bet you really think you're helping "the student," don't you?

@bsa+15pFHP4p. If you think anyone in this business looks at you as a "human being," you've got serious problems. No one cares and never has. You are a widget. A cog in a really messed up machine.

It's also pretty funny that you would be offended by being referred to as talent. Toughen up snowflake!

Considering how many posts here have been predicting June layoffs at Cengage, it better happen or this site will be viewed as just a place where people with axes to grind post rumors to sow discord.

I think it’s beyond hilarious and offensive you label these people as ‘talent’... they’re human beings, people. They are not talent, they are people, don’t forget it.

Yes, layoffs are imminent at Cengage just as they have been for the past 10 years. If it hasn’t happened yet this year it will. The company hires cheap, young talent and then offloads More expensive talent every single year.
