23 Kmart master list

OK, so Kearny is closing as per this link:

https://jobs.sears.com/en-US/search?keywords=%22store%20closing%22&location=&facetcompany=kmart

Now, I am at 23 stores, of which 17 are in the US. And no, I do not count Brooklyn because that is a Sears, not a Kmart.

My public map has only the 17 stateside locations. The few remaining ones with pharmacies are shown as yellow on my map, instead of the standard blue for the others. I did not care to verify the pharmacy status of the off Shore locations.

I debuted a new format of this list that I have been maintaining since 2019. After the last list, I Told myself that if we can at least bounce at least 2 more states, then I would only list the states with active stores, going forward. With MA, MD, PA gone, I fulfilled that threshold. The renowned statistics section still remains, since 2019.

We are now at 23 Kmarts total, 17 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well:

California

  1. Costa Mesa
  2. Freedom -P
  3. Grass Valley -P
  4. South Lake Taco (LOL)

Florida

  1. Key Largo
  2. Key West
  3. Marathon
  4. Miami

Michigan

  1. Marshall -P

Montana

  1. Hamilton

New Jersey

  1. Avenel
  2. West Wood

New York

  1. Bridgehampton
  2. Bronx
  3. Bronx -P
  4. NY -P
  5. White Plains

Territories:
Guam

  1. Tamuning, GU

Puerto Rico

  1. Hato Rey

USVI

  1. St. Croix
  2. St. Croix
  3. St. Thomas
  4. St. Thomas

Statistics: Kmart absent in 44 states. 2 states, (both starting with "M") MI, MT, have only 1 each. There are 17 Kmarts in US States total. Of those in the US, 5, marked with letter "P", have pharmacies.
Puerto Rico has 1 Kmart, USVI has 4, Guam has 1, so 6 total stores outside of the US. 23 total Kmarts left as of now that are not closed or closing.
States with more than 1 Kmart:
CA: 4
FL: 4
NJ: 2
NY: 5

@3sue+19op76QK Exactly. It's a Kmart department within a Sears, not a stand-alone Kmart. My living room is bigger than that tiny department in the basement of that store.

Food for thought: So when Sears closes this location, will the alleged Kmart stay open in the basement!?!?

Jack is not the arbiter of what is and what isn’t a KMart or Sears in the US. Eddie and Leena are, and they wouldn’t allow a store inside of a Sears to be called KMart unless it was a KMart.

If its not on Jack's lists its not a Kmart. He's the decider. End of story.

They just put that sign there to attract customers, fooling them into thinking it's something novel. In reality, it's just a limited Kmart department in the basement of an existing Sears store. Not a full line stand-alone Kmart or anything. It's a Sears with a few grocery items in the basement as a convenience, under the "Kmart" banner, just used to allure ignorant customers who don't Know better.

Go on Google Maps, type in 2359 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY, then go to Street View. What does the Banner on the fence say, just below the parking lot closing at Midnight? It says “Your Brooklyn KMart is Open!”. What does the sign say? It says Sears & KMart.

At Brooklyn, the Sears is using Sears branding and the Kmart is using Kmart branding.

Stop lying, no such press release exists. Media reports at the time described it as a "10,000-square-foot Kmart convenience shop".

If Brooklyn isn’t a KMart, explain why KMart signs are out front? Explain why SH (now TransformCo) put out press releases about the “Grand Opening” of the KMart? Why are you correct and HE/Eddie are wrong?

The Brooklyn Sears is basically a Sears Grand with KMart branding that isn't quite big enough to actually be a Sears Grand. The "KMart" is in the basement of the store which it shares with the tools, mattress, and appliance departments. So basically Kmart occupies less than half the basement and you want to call it its own store?

Why? Because it isn't a Kmart. It is a Sears that sells some Kmart-specific items in the basement as a convenience to customers. It doesn't have a separate store manager for the 2 aisles of toothpaste or mayonnaise jars or whatever nonsense they sell downstairs. It isn't listed on Kmart's website.

I'm not on a crusade at all. On the contrary, the Brooklyn trolls have been on a crusade by posting about 99,873 troll posts ever since I started maintaing these lists. I usually either just ignore them, or give them a quick generic reply, then move on.........

“ With Kmart, it's very cut and dry......either it's a Kmart or it isn't.”

Then why are you on a crusade to say Brooklyn isn’t a KMart? What personal harm or pain will it cause to you if you have to say that Brooklyn is a KMart?

Westwood and Avenel have been available for lease fro quite some time. They will only close when someone else signs a lease on the buildings or Eddie goes belly up. Whichever comes first. With that said, they could be the next to close or they could be the last to close. No one knows until they know. Stop the speculation.

@1jrb+19op76QK You are right, and I stand corrected. I totally forgot about Jersey City Sears. I apologize and sincerely regret the error. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • JC is absolutely in Hudson County, and 201 area code.

The Jersey City Sears is still open, has a 201 area code, and is in Hudson County.

@zyi+19op76QK I would really like to do Sears, but quite frankly, I don't Know enough about it. There are so many different kinds of Sears, like regular Sears, Hometown Sears, appliance Sears, hardware Sears, etc., I don't have an accurate count of those. With Kmart, it's very cut and dry......either it's a Kmart or it isn't. Sears has so many different categories, that I just am not familiar with and I wouldn't want to make any errors. However, there is someone else that frequently posts here that DOES maintain the Sears list. Perhaps he will do it again soon.

On another note, I did call Kearny Kmart out of an abundance of caution, just to confirm they are closing. They are indeed, according to the lady who picked up. Side trivial note, this leaves only 1 Kmart and 0 Sears in the 201 area code. 201 was the original area code for all of NJ, but now is only for Bergen/Hudson counties. That 1 remaining Kmart is WESTWOOD, in Bergen county. Another piece of trivia, that is the only Kmart that does NOT open SUNDAYS due to Bergen county's blue law.

@1ddq+19op76QK Sure WESTWOOD Kmart, survived but so did over 20 others. Every store survives until it doesn't. I am fairly certain (but not promising) that store will close soon, as it is listed for lease here, as is Avenel NJ, so we might have zero Kmarts in NJ very soon:

@1cze+19op76QK Ask and ye shall receive. I thought I posted the map but apparently I forgot. This is the master map, that I maintain, of the mainland US stores. The few in yellow still have a pharmacy. I made this map public:

Lake Taco is a joke, because I like tacos. That's why the LOL is there. I have explained that only about 200 Times before. Anyway, it's a bit ironic that the 2 NJ Kmarts not yet closing, West Wood & Avenel, are the 2 that JLL have listed. Go figure! I'm sure they'll close soon enough though.

Looking at the map of Kearny and Belleville, the former has a Wally within 2 miles and the latter, a Targy within 3 miles. Any Kmart with another department store within a 5 mile radius is virtually guaranteed to close. Surprised it took this long. Look at perhaps Hato Rey, White Plains, & Miami Kmarts to maybe go soon, for that reason, as they all share their towns with other similar competition. With closings coming quickly, this might happen sooner than expected!
