Remember when managers used to encourage us and work with us to ensure everything was done well and on time? Now, all they do is threaten and yell, as if that's going to help anything. I'm getting tired of it, and fast. If you won't help me, then at least let me do my work in peace. You threatening me with a PIP or layoff if something isn't done is counterproductive. What the fu-k happened to this place?

@3plt+1tPN8TDE It’s been a while since I jumped onto this site and it appears you are still locked onto that nonexistent human rights claim. You are even putting the phrase in quotes as if it was verbatim. No one on this site ever said that hot-desking violated their human rights. There have been many posts about how it su-ks, doesn’t work, and is a way to depersonalize our work space, but no one ever mentioned a human rights violation (except you). Repeating it will never make it so. If you want to argue your point, you cannot build upon a lie.
@3ghy I’m not the one comparing having a cushy office job in the Houston suburbs to being interrogated by the Ministry of Love.
Seems like a lot of you have never actually read the book. Or anything else by Eric Arthur Blair (aka George Orwell). Animal Farm actually hits closer, but still misses the mark.
@3dtf The “1984” thing is just the latest example of hyperbole to come from people who need to move on, but can’t or won’t because they lack options.
“Living in 1984” goes in the same bucket as “hot desking violates my human rights” and all the other overheated BS that gets posted here. If you don’t like the place, just leave.
True we can leave but while we work here it feels like 1984. You can't trust anyone. Some of us are stuck until 55 unfortunately. The young ones can leave before they have too much time invested. I am not leaving the pension or medical on the table. So I will continue to suffer a few more years but I will have some fun first. The best revenge is being able to speak your mind if they can't fire you. So yes the millions are freedom to be able to leave when you want. It is a good feeling to leave at 55 and I know plenty of people that did. One person told me when the bucket of money weighs more that the bucket of s hit it's time to get out. There is a lot of s hit at exxon.
@1ubm You are not living in anything even remotely close to the literary world of 1984.
- You can get up and walk out of Exxon anytime.
- If you’ve been with the company for more than ten years, chances are you’re a small-m millionaire, assuming you weren’t an id--t with your money.
- You’re getting paid into mid-six figures.
- You drive a nice car, you eat at nice restaurants, you shop in premium stores, and you live in a master-planned subdivision full of McMansions.
Explain how this equates to brutal totalitarian oppression and the obliteration of all individual liberties.
@OP You’ll deal with the same problems anywhere else in O&G, only you’ll be paid less and work more.
Most of the complaints made on here are forlorn. This is just the way a business operates in the 2020s. There isn’t some magical company out there doing things differently or better. Flat salaries, quiet layoffs, offshoring, toxic management, etc., are all the order of the day for every large publicly traded company. Make peace with it, or leave the workforce.
Darren and Kathy is 100% correct. They've pulled in so many of their own that this will not end well for most. Safe yourself as soon as possible!
For the older workers' fear of pip and losing the high pay. For the youngsters fear of not progressing and getting the raises. The whole company is based on fear. We are living and working in 1984 and big brother is watching. We should revolt and let these a holes have it. I know of some older workers that are quiet quitting. They are working less and daring the company to fire them or pip them. Stand up to management and do something. I have seen some bold employees tell the bosses this place su-ks and the place is full of a--holes in meetings. It was hilarious. Another made fun of the extreme safety handrails, walking while thinking, MOCs for using the bathroom.
The fear based culture has created meek employees who are afraid to speak up and reward those who propagated fear behind closed doors.
Instead of promoting qualified employees, company promoted people based on likability, coercion, and ambiguous skills. There is a reason for the lack transparency in available jobs and why jobs are never posted. Cronyism and fear prevails here.
OP, Darren and Kathy happened to this place. Just Kathy and Darren. They've ki-led this company.
Yeah supervisors saying shape up or your out the gate. Fear of saftey for not holding the hand rail. For not walking while eating. I was asked to push others to complete tasks. I am not a supervisor and it is not my business or job to hound these people. I was also told to report if others did not give me enough work. I told the supervisor that their supervisor should do this. My supervisor said that I needed to provide info for them to pass onto the other supervisors. I have not and will not do this. So my ranking will drop because of this. Fear of everything is the norm at excon. When you don't trust your voice workers or management how can you do your best. Fear creates inaction and ki-ls innovation. Not a good thing for the research department.
Disagree! Xom has gotten far worse in the last 10 years regarding a fear based culture. I’ve not seen anyplace worse
Its been this way forever at ExxonMobil. I’d say the fear based culture has slightly improved over the years.
