I have never worked in a company where micromanagement lowers company morale and creates a hostile workplace to such an extent. I have the feeling that the manager is watching me 24/7! Is leaving the only solution?

Apart from complete lack of social awareness, their professional performance would be impacted. Being high on endorphins gives them a rosy view of their abilities and will make them overpromise and underdeliver.
No wonder his teams have been underperforming.
This manager likes to pump up his endorphins by cycling two hours to work.

Then all his collaborators get to be shouted down by him. No wonder, he is high on endorphins and lacks any social awareness.
Some managers are just nut jobs.
They get responsibility first time in their lives. No one in their personal life would entrust them with any thing important like getting food but they get to be managers. Their only experience is working individually for 30 years in academia. You can expect the social skills of a porcupine from them.
