Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

Any negotiation on keep equipment (mostly laptops)

Hey as we all await the dreaded day (Sept 24) I was wondering if anyone from previous layoffs or know from others if there is a possibility of keeping the laptop given for work? I'm trying to find any silver lining here

Funny that you think Macbook Pros are $500. Not to even mention the double monitors, mice, keyboards, webcams, etc.

I am less interested in the laptop, as the last refresh was pre-Covid, but it came with nice large monitors... They can have the iPhone 6 they gave me when I started and is too small for me to even read email on anymore.

"Even if you keep it it’s on their system - you’ll have an issue when your PW expires and you can’t change it. The machine will eventually be bricked"

They wipe the machine before you take it if they allow you. You are right though if you just dont turn it in it will be bricked

They’re not gonna let you keep your laptop and they’re not going to negotiate with you on any points. The HR department is completely overwhelmed and they are shorthanded. I hired an attorney to help negotiate my exit and my attorney was so frustrated with HR that he told me he wasn’t going to charge me for any of the work he did, my recommendation to everyone getting laid off right now is too higher a financial advisor if you can afford it and make smart financial decisions for your future. If you get laid off, while difficult and upsetting, I promise you will feel a great deal of relief being set free from the stress and toxicity you’ve been holding in your body. Your health will be much better on the outside and great opportunity awaits you in time.

I kept my headphones. I only returned my laptop and phone. To be honest though, I wanted to return my equipment. Clean break. Fresh Start. They made it very easy to return the equipment. Courier came to my house to collect the laptop. I shipped the phone back but they paid for the shipping. Overall, the company has been great with my layoff…severance, benefits, career counseling, etc.

I have an old laptop I never returned when I got upgraded. If I get laid off I’ll just play d-mb and keep my new laptop. If they keep insisting, I’ll just return the old laptop. Maybe they won’t even notice. This place is so strapped for cash they might not have the resources to check.

I left several years ago in another waive. They didn't give me the courier info, HR was such a mess, it was a big one so they were not on top of things. I never returned my laptop or phone, and collected full severance - probably depends on whose radar its on. I never got an email or anything to follow up.

I inquired with HR about the possibility of my laptop in August, but unfortunately, even thought it was 5 years old I was informed that it wasn't an option.

@wvl+1uzM3Y4b Be nice! It’s a valid question. There are actually people out there that have never been through a layoff. It’s scary. Show some compassion.

@ghg+1uzM3Y4b Well... they can keep your severance. I don't know why the other person who said that was downvoted, but they are absolutely right. They have full right to withhold it, should they not get their equipment back.

I'm not saying they do or don't do that, but they absolutely can.

They’ll send you instructions to return it with a courier service. If you don’t return, they’ll follow up with an email, to shame you. If you still don’t, they may rescind your severance.

I had to return mine, the phone, earphones etc. it's like you're out, bye bye! And we're cutting your p+ I mean they could have let us keep p+ for 6 months or so! As a consolation prize!

just keep it, what are they going to do? Someone who was laid off last year in July still hasn't returned theirs.

Everyone I know who has been laid off has had to return their laptop. I’m guessing it’s a security thing as much anything. Download your stuff locally to a personal drive or computer if applicable.

If it is older and no value or you are an executive (No definition on that) then I heard some people were able to keep them. Have HR ask for you
