Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Experienced employees leaving for greener pastures

Looks like older employees with most experience are no longer waiting to be cut by Seagate. They are finding better jobs and leaving on their own.

We lost two of our best workers within two weeks of each other because they were tired of their experience, knowledge and years here being held against them.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the company if this continues.

"Bottomline is experienced workforce require new freshers for diversity, which will benefit both and the company."

Diversity isn't a need of the company to do a good job, competence is. Not to say the new grads aren't competent, but you're ignoring the older staff that is competent, but is laid off for their age.

"By the way, age discrimination can happen anywhere, not a seagate problem."

And that makes it OK? May Seagate did a survey of similar employers and found that they all practiced age discrimination, so Seagate didn't want to be left behind?

You must be a follower of the infamous Dr. Pom.

seriously no more young blood wanted to join seagate anymore,

reason being ,it has a bad reputation and infamous for retrenchment culture (even for a young graduate)

no one is safe from being retrenched in seagate, ask all the IT professional around the reputation of seagate, its all you need to know is #retrenchment

You took a step further, branching out and throwing your blanket statements.

By the way, age discrimination can happen anywhere, not a seagate problem.

Age discrimination is a real problem at Seagate and has been for a while. Just look at these posts. Saying older people can't be innovate is no different than saying women can't be good engineers and such other blanket statements. The only difference being that at Seagate, age discrimination is one form of discrimination still perceived as OK and accepted among a vast percentage of employees. The company has a real problem despite the messages about diversity and refuse to specifically address age discrimination and stereotypes in the workforce.

You will be more hilarized when you find out about the "experienced" and "talented" staff.

" ability to work more (time, energy, zeal, enthusiasm)"

That's hilarious. If they are so full of enthusiasm, how come none of the new hires are to be found after 5 pm?

You are amazed out of your own assumption that young is more creative. The observable behavior is the young dare to be creative.

And the realistic world work in a way if business is unable to overcome difficulties, they go stagnant and decline.

Staff who work for long time gain experience and know more about development/growth of the coy. Despite so, hiring new freshers out from school is essential as they have the latest knowledge/skills and the ability to work more (time, energy, zeal, enthusiasm) for the coy.

Experience is obviously a main factors looked upon, but at the same time, one must have some skills and innovation which is commonly found in a fresher.

No its not lame to blame difficulties for business stagnation, its realistic. HAMR and MAMR are incredibly difficult technologies to implement, which is why they still haven't made it into the marketplace. Quite possibly, they will never make it into the marketplace.

It amazing me when people just assume that because an employee is young that they will be more creative. It totally ignores the talented staff who has worked at Seagate for years, if not decades, that makes meaningful contributions every day. With attitudes like that, its no wonder so many smart people are leaving.

Business generally follows below life cycle model. And seagate has progress beyond maturity, currently at decline.

Introduction -> Growth -> Maturity -> Decline.

Also it’s lame to blame challenges & difficulties for business stagnation.

Age plays a part in problem engagement. We are young once as well, we think and work differently compare with our senior. Younger people dare to be creative and commit, which might be what the coy needs now.

The business is stagnant because the technology is mature and areal density growth from here is difficult without HAMRy MAMRy stuff, which is in itself difficult. Has nothing to do with the age of the employees. Younger employees are all wondering why we don't spend more money and effort on SSD.

"If fact, this coy needs the old to be replaced with new blood. Sadly, the “experience” from the old blood is what make the business still & stagnant."

well said, now the younger generation would not want to join seagate either due to high turnover rate.

Older generation should work even harder now. Some design center should close off for now

“Executives make decisions and set the course for the company.”

  • How are those helping the coy so far? (or blame industry change & not change wth time)

“The engineering and support staff work their tails off to achieve the goals.”

  • Are the coy producing good hdd? (try googling seagate hdd review)

Hahaha. I told ya BRO! MERCENARY BABY! More money, more offers, better environments out there galore BABY in the USA! The 2 who left can do like STX does and ghost 'em with 0 days notice. No mercy given and none received. No loyalty like STX wants it. Knowledge and know how GONE. Let some new grad figure it out from square 1 baby. No law exists for giving 2 weeks notice, and STX would walk your butt right out immediately without mercy. Experience not valued at STX man. Can anyone explain how experience is rewarded and retained at Seagate? That's right ...the only one is the severance package promise BABY!

"Still and stagnant"....

Please provide an example on how this works. Executives make decisions and set the course for the company. The engineering and support staff work their tails off to achieve the goals. Exactly where did things fail due to "Still and stagnant" ?

However the "experienced" old blood have to admit that they need to observe and absorb -relatively- new engineering stuffs as well as new technology-ish stuffs.
