Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Consequences of blindly laying off people

Layoffs have a huge behavioral and physical negative effect on people. So while company like GF is trying to maintain their margins, it is exacting an enormous human tool.
Layoffs are stressful, and stress leads to a bunch of unhealthy behaviors. People's social identity and friends networks are often tied up with their jobs and where they work. Research has shown layoffs can cause a 15% to 20% increase in death rates for affected workers for the following 20 years, and they can drive the odds of su----e up by two times or more. We as a society will pay for the health consequences of these layoffs.
In many instances, layoffs don't increase stock prices or cut costs. Between things like the cost of severance and the loss of productivity, layoffs have pretty nasty and negative consequences for the company. It's not clear they actually increase profits.
The irony is that GF was talking a year ago about people as their most important asset, and now they're treating their employees pretty badly, laying them off . These layoffs are a decision that reflects the company's values, and GF has basically given the remaining good and talented employees the middle finger.

This thread is the most insightful and perceptive in a long time on this board

@3hqm, although abrasive, is still is right in a way, at least as it applies to my situation.

I've chosen to stay at GF for a few reasons

  • it's familiar, obviously
  • pay is within 5% of what other companies have offered
  • I bought a house before rates and prices spiked, can't live this cheap elsewhere
  • my position is secure, there's no one to perform the same function as of now

Then again I mostly lurk so I'm not sure I fall into the group of "whiners" he was targeting.

All these brilliant professionals whining about how horrible GF is. Leave. If you're so skilled and valuable go somewhere else. You won't though, you've all got it too easy and would rather snivel and cry than actually grow a pair and bail. You all have a million excuses why you cant leave, but continually b-tch day and night how bad you have it. Those that were laid off, you got it for a reason, go live your life elsewhere. You're all a bunch of worthless pus-ies.

GF continues to lie to employees by saying employees are their most valuable asset. However, when the SLT team needs to meet the next quarter financial results they just up and get rid of their most valuable asset. Further, there are many employees at GF who get lied to and are told to come to GF where you can have a career, not just a job, so employees stay at GF for less pay with the hope of having a longer-term career. However, the truth is there will be no 20+ year people at GF any longer, with attrition rates up near 20% the typical employee will last at GF 5 years or less. Net, show the same loyalty to GF that they show to you, ZERO. Go out and get offers from other companies and make GF match or walk away. Every year or two go get new offers and squeeze as much salary increase and as much retention bonus out of GF as you can get. I learned a while back GF will never take care of me which is what you would like an employer to do, we each need to take care of ourselves, each year see how bad GF needs to keep you. If they need you, they will continue to try to match other offers and give you additional retention bonuses. Treat GF like a lemon and squeeze every drop of juice out of them that you can get during your limited time at GF!! Think short-term and maximizing your salary and retention bonuses from GF!!

Yeah the mood in AME is terrible at the moment. Even more so since the layoff. I just interviewed last week hoping to get word soon. I’m leaving as soon as humanly possible.

We are living in capitalist economy which means that all interactions between an employer and employee are transactional. Any employer is not your family unless it is your blood family business, anything else is at will, you need to keep that in mind.

With that being said, if you are not happy just look for your next gig, look for yourself and you real family first. Always have emergency fund saved and be willing to move around. Complaining won't solve your issue, in fact it will make it worse. Stay positive and smart everyone.

Layoffs KI-L trust and no trust ki-ls teamwork. The productivity will plummet and has after the last layoff. Most everyone I see are not working hard because they say why should I bust my a-s for a company who could care less about me, I'm just a disposable widget to them!!

Sadly most people will sit around and wait to be next. I was one of them. Not anymore. Is it challenging to start over and find a new job? Yes. Is it better than being miserable and uncertain? Yes.

Let’s be honest; there are two sides of children acting out. There is the one side who has been coming on and bragging about how good they have it, after layoffs, but had zero issue with GF, prior to layoffs, calling people that remain “as$-l1ckers.” Then you have the other side that is calling out those folks, trolling them to the point where one cannot differentiate if one is trolling all or just those people.

We need to stay on topic: layoffs and news/rumors related to that. Leave the emotions behind.

TC sold the employees out for short term financial gains. This was data that short term financial gains were the most important and the BS about our employees being the most important asset for GF was just that "BS". Get rid of the whole leadership team and start fresh!!

@OP You said it perfectly.

On another note there is one A-hole in here trolling people who were laid off. That person is special kind of a-hole. I hope that person is never visited by their own karma and laid off. And if they are I hope they realize what an a-hole they’ve been.

Yes and watch this spring they will star up with the onegf and we are a family bullsh-t again. I think people forget we have had layoffs every year for last 6-7 years. People are finally waking up to hypocrisy of it all after recent one. They can go fu-k themselves.
