Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

What motivated you the most to look for a new job?

I’ve been here a long time and it wasn’t easy to make the decision to start all over again, primarily because of my age and then because I've become very comfortable working here. However, I didn’t want to experience them telling me they didn’t need me anymore, so I found a new job.

What I don't understand is why the people who have a chance to find much better jobs than I do, despite everything, choose to stay at GE. Sometimes I wonder what else needs to happen so they decide to look for better options for themselves???

@3fjs+1aJZSVEa you hit it perfectly! The nepotism is out of control at GE but I also can't understand why any parent would willingly subject their kid to the same unhappy fate as themselves. If I'm going to suffer at GE, as most everybody claims they do, I'm going to make sure it's so my kids can have a better life outside of GE. So many people here expect to be compensated for the accomplishes of family members who were there long before them. One of the biggest pathetic jokes I see that I simply can't stand are these young kids with that stupid red shirt that says "Our Labor Built GE". How much "labor" did somebody in their 20's or 30's contribute to GE's being built?? The past 10 years aren't anything to brag about! Going beyond that, most of them weren't even part of GE or they were so junior, their efforts didn't contribute much. The Union handed these shirts out like candy to make them all feel included in the struggle they were never around for. It went to their heads! We can't rebuild the GE Empire that requires blood, sweat, and tears to do so with a bunch of workers who draw the line at bruises, bad hair days, and sniffles.

@3msd+1aJZSVEa. It's a generational thing. When I first got in at GE , I was new to the area with no local family. When I started meeting and talking to people it seemed like EVERYONE had at least one family member that had worked for GE, or they themselves had worked there before. I quickly learned that those same people thought that GE owed them something for some perceived wrong done to a family member in the past. It was, and still is, pathetic. Unfortunately, the same is happening at the hall. The reins are passed on to the next generation, and the issues are perpetuated. In glad I no longer have to deal with it.

Ignorance is Bliss, Denial is a Wonderful Thing, and there is such a things as being Fat, D-mb, and Happy. To do better you have to put in effort. Effort requires Work and Work requires Movement. Movement might make you Sweat... The HORROR!!! If you're happy, why would you put in the effort to better yourself? You need drive/motivation in order to want to better yourself. In most cases Happiness will prevent you from wanting something better because Happiness creates Content. Content people lack motivation and just sit in autopilot. Don't worry why people lack the motivation to better themselves. Look on the bright side, it's less competition for you! What a lot of people don't realize is that you can be Happy while being Content in the Moment for what you have Achieved, and still remain Hungry for more! The mindset at GE for a very long time has been "I made it! I got in! Now I can relax because I'm set for life!" The day they got hired is the day their motivation ended. This mindset goes back for decades. Well into last century. This is one of the key reasons for the drastic decline in Schenectady. Many will deny it but they also deny accountability routinely for anything as well. It's a sad fact and those people have nobody else to blame but themselves. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
