Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Managers calling you on days off?

My 23 year old daughter has worked at Macys for over six months now, and we have had an issue with the manager calling her on days off to work or asking silly work related questions, it was to a point that every day she was off this manager would call her sometimes twice a day, I finally answered the phone and told the manager that she is an hourly worker in school part time and if they want her “on call” they need to pay her one hours pay every time she answers the phone with a work related question. Then, suddenly the calls stopped. Has anyone else experienced this? She just put in her two week notice.

A manager should not be calling an hourly employee on his or her day off with any questions except are you available to work? But reading your post, I first thought what is going on with this manager? Something is not right. Your daughter should have done what you did, but I get it. So good for you!

Let me profile you.

You are about 50 years old
Overweight and live alone
Live in basement or one room apartment
Never been good with females
Have a odd obsession with Taylor swift
Have to check in with a parole officer twice a week
Are a registered s-x offender who can’t go near elementary, middle, or high schools
Have been banned from local college campus

Hahahaha!

{{We are not rich people- just middle-class working stiffs who raised our child to be an independent adult by encouraging them to work hard, study hard, and be a good and honest person. Someone who not only can think for their self, but has developed the tools to solve their own problems. We were always there to provide loving guidance and still are- but we realize our child's life is their own.
The fact that you immediately resorted to foul name-calling speaks volumes about who you are. Frankly, I feel sorry for you and even more so for your daughter because of the example you are setting.}}

you need to leave that mother alone. I would do the same thing if some creep manager was calling my kid. And at 23 a person is not fully "cooked" (as Judge Judy says). So, sit down and shut up you sound like a middle class Karen who is bitter she didn't make it in life.

That sounds like a Macys corporate shill pretending to be the parent of an “Ivy League” child, what. A. Joke.

The "profile" is not even close. Happily married, with a child who graduated from two ivy league schools (undergrad and masters) and has a successful fulfilling career- and their own apartment AND phone which I would NEVER presume to answer- as you apparently did as you pointed out in your post.

Yes I did have this happen when I worked for
MTech but after I complained it stopped quickly. Remind your so called “Manager” and I use that term loosely, that you are an hourly employee on a scheduled day off. Repeated offenses will result a call to HR. If you are on an On Call rotation and are scheduled for a certain weekend then unfortunately you are on the hook. But on a normal basis no way. I’m glad this young woman is leaving and will find something better.

I have 2 phones, one that I use personally and one that I have as my work phone. On my days off, my work phone is powered off and I make sure the voicemail is full. Problem solved.

I am not saying it’s right for a manager to converse with or text an hourly colleague about work when not being paid….

That being said I would be embarsssed if my mother got involved and I was 23 years old.
Let your ADULT workforce age woman handle her own issues. You are doing her no favors. Ask your mom for advice on how to handle kr proceed but don’t personally get involved.

That is why the workforce these days is a disaster show. 18-35 year old babies living at home and when the slightest issue arises mommy and daddy step into fix. YOU are part of the problem

We live in Connecticut, if someone is hourly any work related discussion/phone calls must be documented and paid. Connecticut is very strict with labor laws.

You called your daughters' place of work to address an issue she was having??! Work issue aside, you should be encouraging your adult daughter to address her own work issues- you are not helping her- if anything, those apron strings are going to strangle her and prevent her from maturing into the woman she has the right to become- on her own terms. Do not sabotage her future employment with such actions. She will hate you for it.

best thing she ever done was put in her twice notice which btw you do not have to do.. but its extra special to hear its during the final xmas time ! that part makes me giggle ! also it does sound like he was going after her but in the manager defense i was on vacation and kept getting calls every single day to come in work cause everyone called out.. i answered back and said no i cant come in im not in the state im on vacation.. I had to lie to keep my "vacation" thats the low life dirty company you work for..
Just for extra laughs being this place sux .. tell your daughter to go to lunch and dont come back lmao ! block the managers number and the store number and have a merry christmas lmao !

Calling to ask work questions is definitively not ok.
But in our store we're so under staffed with so many open shifts the managers are told to call everyone and hound them to pick up more shifts or extend their shifts.
I don't understand why the computer only makes some shifts 4 or 6 hours with so many open jobs. They should all be scheduled 8 hour shifts.
It's such a waste of time for them trying to fill all these hours. Think of all the time they could have spent cleaning their floors instead.

That does not sound like a manager's role but one of a male stalking a female co-worker.

I had this happened to me 20 years ago in the electronics industry. A male engineer would repeatedly show up during my shift (swing shift) to ask stupid questions. I finally told my manager about it and the result was the engineers security badge was altered so he could not enter the building during my shift. He had no business being there during those hours and it set off red flags to his boss too.

Glad to hear that your daughter put in her notice. Hope she finds a much better place to work at.
