Thread regarding Alphabet Inc. (Google) layoffs

Changing job from CISCO to Google

Hello everyone,
I've been with CISCO for more than 12 years with expertise in multiple technologies (our compute, our SDN, automations skills etc) in consulting and deployment side of things for many different types of companies. But the growth in CISCO is stagnant. I am looking to move into Google Cloud. I am seeing a lot of conversation about hiring freeze, layoffs etc., While, I understand the entire sentiment around this i want to know if this is good jump. What are some of the hurdles i would have to cross ? What is the general sentiment around this ?

what about a manager lying in your performance review saying you made up numbers and locking up the grades without even talking to you about the subject ? And then you contact HR and nothing is done. If you face the same thing at CISCO then you might get used to.. I did not.. integrity is not something you will find here.

Telecom reputation is bad because of the culture. The engineering challenges on embedded devices are not trivial. The culture on faangs is slowly turning to that of the yesterday's greats due to natural selection in hiring favoring one denographic

@4laa+1mNA3PjG Were the manager and director from the same caste/country?

let me give you some examples: 1) a team was giving me 8 months estimates to build a simple feature because they did not know how to resolve. 2) I contact the director of that team and offered a proposal which he agreed 3) contacted the team, everybody was happy and we planned a POC in 2 weeks (very different from 8 months). my manager was very happy. 4) during the development of the POC the team discovered a different way to solve the problem and took that path which is fine. Then on my performance review the manager said the director mentioned the fact I proposed a solution that his team did not implement it was waste of everybody's time. My manager, a typical useless brown nose program manager, accepted the bad feedback and add to my performance review. This is the type of environment you will face on this amazing Google.

@3cba+1mNA3PjG I guess Google is really that bad, which explains why they haven't accomplished anything after acquiring Doubleclick. I guess go for a FAAN, but not sure if those companies would add any value beyond a salary hike.

@2lof+1mNA3PjG I also worked in telecom for more than 23 years but the level of politics at google it is unprecedentedly high. I only way I would choose google comparing to my telecom decades would be my naive ignorance for never worked at google.

I worked in telecom for many years as well, and the politics are worse in telecom than any FAANG. FAANG employees complain about their incompetent colleagues, but telecom is at another level. This is partly because half the project is often outsourced to India and is being done by new grads who want to get off the project.

Layoffs shouldn't be a concern. The work you get in telecom is highly dependent on the overall state of the economy. If the economy is doing well, you get work, otherwise you do nothing and wait for layoffs.

I would say make the move if you can because you'll probably get paid much more. The work in AWS should be better because they have a better service.

this reminds me my first day at google. We had the integration training on that week and some google employees were contributors to these trainings. I remember one of these employees was from google cloud and he told us he was very happy being there because everything on his plate was in constant "fire" and he was taking a break being there with us. This gave me a very bad impression of google cloud.

I am assuming you are looking for a position with google cloud. When the recruiter contact you, ask how good is to work at google cloud in terms of mental healthiness, work life-balance and politics. If the recruiter be honest, you will not want to join regardless the salary. Believe me, I do not know you, but you do not deserve such miserable life.

Google is only status and nothing else.

+ a big salary hike (at least when you come from Cisco).

If you asked me this advice about 5 years ago, I would say "absolutely". Now Google hired so many bad people, especially in leadership roles, that I can say the environment is very toxic. When people with very low capabilities to perform their jobs are in place, the only way they can survive is by doing politics which creates a very toxic atmosphere. Google is now politically driven and toxic. My recommendation is CISCO is an excellent company. If you are there for 12 years, I would not risk it. Google is only status and nothing else.

if you like a toxic place full of politics with a very team with very low technical capacity (only the useless leetcode), then google is the perfect place for you.
