I lost my job after years of service due to Symantec coming on board and having too many employees doing same job. They said my job was being eliminated but there was a consolation of positions and I was out. So this is not a family like business they don’t look at all the positions and skill sets you have built up over the years nor do they see if they can move you elsewhere. It’s sad because I felt just like a number no loyalty matter. On the positive side their severance is good.

You may not know this yet, but it’s a blessing to be let go from Broadcom. Broadcom tends to focus cuts on those that have no ability to go anywhere else. These people are the most mailable to manipulate. The following criteria will make someone eligible for keep.

  • old
  • low skilled (tester, no marketable domain knowledge, etc)
  • visa constraints

Sorry to hear of your job loss and perceived lack of appreciation for your contributions and skills, but hopefully your expertise should help you land a better position elsewhere. BRCM sure isn't going to nurture the careers and protect the jobs for most of us because we're just numbers on a spreadsheet. Unfortunately, brown-nosers and deadweights exist and will do anything to hold on to their positions at the expense of higher-performing employees. It's a particularly cutthroat and totally money-driven workplace that has everyone on edge and worried about layoffs whenever earnings don't meet expected targets or a change in business strategy develops.

The criteria to get laid off apparently is not being best buddies and way up your managers a–. Being a top performer means nothing. Generating tons of revenue means nothing. Being excellent at the job you were told to do even if it's not what you wanted to be doing and changing everytime they said change means nothing.
I was a product specialist with CA, then Broadcom asked if I could be a generalist, I obliged and excelled– fast forward to the middle of the worst recession in generations and they say well you aren't a specialist and we are eliminating generalist roles so you are gone, without any formal assessment for aptitude for other roles and brown nosing asslicks got the roles.

F that place. Hope you enjoy all the money I've made you over the years

As a former BRCM Recruiting employee, (MWG days), I am sorry to hear this news. Seems BRCM has really changed its core values of hiring and retaining the best engineering talent that build the best silicon technologies on the market.

@38uou+125J2Vyx it's being driven by unit performance. employees are nothing but a cog in a business unit portfolio company. Broadcom is like a private equity company. when a unit starts to struggle, Hock manage cash flow and expenses, including layoffs. no different than your own investment portfolio, when a stock u have is a dog..what do you do..?

sorry to hear about your situation. it s—s but we are all on eggshells of varying degrees and thicknesses...

the only change we can make is a new job, and yes it's a tough market but i do see opportunities out there.

Not sure what’s the criteria Broadcom is using to determine who’s getting laid off. I was let go Wednesday with no attendance issues and my last review was outstanding.

Is there any kind of confirmation of this number in Fort Colins, 20%?

I was in the hospital this week when the RIFs went out; lost my job there after nine years, and three promotions.

"RIF’s started today (reduction in force). They told me 20% in Fort Collins. I was one after 11 years as a technician, and moved into engineering (6 years). Wow! Blown away!"

Layoff old white guys. At least they kept all us H1b in California. Broadcom is great this way. They let go all the citizens first save us struggling immigrants

More layoffs today during a pandemic for a company that is very profitable!
Some profitable companies value their employees and are holding them through this global health issue. Will be interesting to see which ones DO value their employees once we get through this.
Run by financial spreadsheets for more and more profit. They only consideration.
Feeling very unethical. Not a place to be during good or bad as you don't know where you stand at any given moment with ZERO indication that this is coming.
Can understand those companies, that are about to go under, not the ones looking to chop when they ethically know.

You forgot to mention the favorite activity of Broadcom employees working in the third floor of the San Diego office. They trade stocks and brag about their fat bonuses while working 1 day out of the week.

I was thinking of other teams besides CA in the third floor of the office in San Diego. The only thing running lean in that floor is the employees who spend most of their time at the fitness facility in the first floor. Real work is a scarce commodity for those groups.

If you come from CA business you can get away with even less than 1 day. If you are a manager you literally don’t have to lift a finger all week, except when you point it at a direct report. I thought Broadcom ran lean. There is still so much dead weight, very wasteful. The only reason they exist is to justify the fat pay checks above them. All CA products are ripe for India. Crusty & stale and Broadcom is investing even less than CA. I can’t imagine what is to become of these products

The third floor of Broadcom's office in San Diego is working at 20% capacity. That means that people are working effectively just one day of the week. People in this floor browse the internet, "work from home" or pursue their favorite hobby or business ventures during work hours. The only thing left in this floor is politics, because when you don't have enough work to do, only playing office politics will save you from being laid off.

Wireless might see cuts. Hock believes the game is to sell as much software as possible. Just wait until that very software tarnishes the Broadcom name. That is when all the non core want real support. CA didn’t end up on the trash pile for it’s great software.

Yep. The mood in the trenches is not good. Even folks I know in that “special part” of CA aren’t happy. Like Broadcom management, smart folks are maximizing their time here.

Only concern is timing of jumping ship. The economy is starting to slow down. Late next year has potential of a recession, if not 2021 for sure. Broadcom's only leverage point is laying off people so beware...

Yes there are constant rumors. But I’m currently interviewing anyway. CA Technologies products are old and are hurting a persons career prospects. Lots of people post about the great rsu. Broadcom pays it out over 7 years. It’s a little scam. Most teams in CA business are people with various visa issues. Otherwise I suspect they would leave too. Everyone seems to hate their job never seen so many people openly discuss leaving

Based on previous acquisitions there will likely be series of layoffs starting with low hanging fruit first. Retention should be generous during this period and Broadcom treats layed off employees well. After a while Broadcom likes to use atrition to bring head count down but with a high stock price not many people leave so there may be additional cuts to improve profitability within business units.

Broadcom is not a family run business that will take care of you. It's a business transaction for your services and low performers can expect to be cut. High performers also if the business unit is not doing well.

Those that remain tend to do well.

Work life balance is there if you don't let them take advantage of you.

I want to know this too,
Does Broadcom have plan or going to lay-off people from newly acquired Symantec employees?
