Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M Decatur Chem closing

Decatur employees were notified that the Chemical plant there is closing. Think this is about 300-400 jobs impacted. Between Cordova and Decatur there was a lot of extra capacity with PFAS going away

@321 if they can afford to and 3Ms retiree medical support covers them, maybe they will retire. But many of these people have given up their precious time in loyalty to a company that now treats 50 and over crowd as an expense, not as an experienced asset to train the next class of workers.

I happily made it to late 50s with pension and retiree medical but lament what corporations have become, worshipping stock buybacks over giving people a long-term (pension) reason to stay.

@a3 Why should they retire because they are over 60? Maybe they cannot afford to because they are taking in their younger generation (that doesn't have the same work ethic)???

@2s0 I'm not sure what you are referring to by modern day nursing home...assuming you are talking about the older generation working there. Those people have probably worked hard their whole lives and with rising costs maybe they have to continue to work, plus it's in our dna to work, that's how we were brought up...we work for everything that we have, not given to us like some of the younger generations.

I’m curious how this affects Cottage Grove and their Chem Ops. Would imagine CG sees an increase in volume but idk if the stuff that gets produced at Decatur also gets produced at CG

@a3 Same as the old GoodYear Plant... so many over 60 that won't retire.

@OP is the films plant still in business. At that, for now, provides some decent jobs.

At least until BB figures out his bank account could use a few extra million and decides to deep six the films business. Looks like today was Part 1 of 2 for BB to bring his Minnesota Nasty gig to Bama.

Hey BB we know your friends check up here. at least give decent severance packages like 3M used to dole out.

Sad to hear this - I worked at the Decatur plant a few years ago. The 3Mers there are terrific and it is a great community.

I am worried for the future of big 3M after hearing about this. With Cordova getting all of Decatur’s volume, any extended downtime in Cordova can put 3M belly-up. When Cordova blew up one of their buildings long ago, Decatur picked up the volume, and vice versa. 3M is now at the hands of any natural disaster or bad accident at the plant.

Part of this is on Mikey Mike. He unwisely announced 3M was exiting PFAS when it had no alternatives.

BB looked at the numbers whilst on his Florida yacht and decided he could have his salary bumped up by a few cool million with more layoffs.

The community impact from 3M including job losses and pollution are tragic.

Will some of BBs operatives who routinely monitor this board please tell the man he can't take it with him when he passeth on. Time for BB to live off half his undeserved millions and give back to those he has rear ended.

Decatur will go under with so many employees 60 years and up refusing to retire it will be a mess in a couple of years
