Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Anonymous map guy

Whoever the anonymous guy who keeps up this map (this isn't Listman's, this is someone else's), it's pretty accurate and I'm glad you're staying on top of it, whoever you are, but there's a error. You accidentally deleted White Plains NY Sears from your map. As of now, that store isn't closing yet. You have White Plains Kmart on your map, but not Sears (they have both brands in that town). You might want to fix that, in case you are reading this.

Hey Nonymous dude, few random observations. I have noticed, that (at least as of Mon.), all the US based Kmarts that share a town with a Sears have zero jobs listed on the jobs website. That means our theory of those stores closing may just be beginning to bear fruit, and come to fruition. I am cautiously optimistic, but I think White Plains, Key West, Miami, Silver Spring, & Long Beach Kmarts might hopefully kick the bucket soon! Well, actually Long Beach CA Kmart now has Part-Time jobs only, but that could indicate a potential closing.

Now, back to the topic of this thread, I was also observing in detail, Anonymous map guy's map here:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1p1KF8SWbdXxLBnqFrGe21e_VlcdCVdQU&ll=41.844579109537065%2C-139.97478575000002&z=3

I noticed he has made some changes for example he now includes White Plains, Key West Sears. However, I have not seen Pharr TX, Fort Collins CO, Thornton CO (Grand), Anchorage AK (Home & Life), Overland Park KS (Home & Life). Nor have I seen Brownsville TX, Aurora CO be removed yet. Just thought I'd run that map by you since you seem to be the expert on all things, Sears-locations, related, while List Man Jack seems to be the expert on all things Kmart-related. I noticed that on this map, he already removed MN Kmart, but on List man's map, it is still there. I read another post by Listman, that he is awaiting the City Council vote on May 13, to make it official. Hopefully that's just a formality as I am looking forward to the Nicollet Ave. intersection finally opening up. Take care!

And in White Plains, NY (where this post started), the Sears and Kmart are less than two miles apart.

In the other cities (Silver Spring, Miami, Mayaguez) they are quite a bit more distant from each other.

The two Bronx Kmarts are about five miles apart.

The Key West stores are even closer, Kmart at 2928 N Roosevelt Blvd and Sears at 3200 N Roosevelt Blvd., an 8-minute walk apart.

Oddly, the 2 Long Beach stores are 1 mile apart: Kmart, 2900 N Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90815
Sears, 2100 N Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90815. Odd that they don't combine the two to reduce overhead.

@: @chq+13rGYUmH asks: How many towns are left that have both formats still open?

New York City (2 Kmarts in Bronx, 1 Kmart in Manhattan,, 1 Sears in Brooklyn with embedded mini-Kmart)

the rest below each have one Kmart and one Sears:

White Plains, NY
Silver Spring, MD
Miami, FL
Key West, FL
Long Beach, CA
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico

Any of these would seem like good candidates for consolidation if there are further rounds of closings.

@2zow+13rGYUmH This is precisely why I avoided the Sears-end of things. There is simply too much overlap and not enough cut-and-dry differentiation between store types. At least with Kmart, either it is a Kmart or it isn't. So I'll stick to the Kmart end of things, for now. At least until the total Sears count falls below 60 or so, which is about when I started taking over the Kmart counts. At least then it will be more manageable and less unwieldy. They still have way too many stores in very close locations that need to be thinned out quite a bit. 3-4 stores MAX, per state, is plenty. Later, gator!

Oops, in my last comment, I did not mean Anchorage (which is a Home & Life store), but rather Honolulu:

I don't have the energy to make a map right now, but feel free to do one yourself, based on my list, if you wish.

The stores on my list are ONLY those labelled as "Sears Store" in the state-by-state listings at https://www.sears.com/stores.html . I did NOT include any stores that are listed as Hometown Stores, Sears Appliance Outlet Stores, Service Centers Repair Drop off Locations, stand-alone Sears Auto Centers (a few of those remain), or any other category except "Sears Store".

In a few cases, when I clicked on a "Sears Store" link, the store page identified it as a "Home & Life", "Appliance & Mattress", "Appliance", or "Grand" store. I identified each of these in my list in parentheses. I have seen media reports that the Anchorage store is another "Appliance & Mattresss" mini-store, but the Sears website doesn't identify it as such, so I didn't either.

And the summary:

84 Sears stores in 24 US states, plus 6 in Puerto Rico.

26 states with no Sears stores.
7 states with only one Sears store: CT, GA, KS, ME, OH, SC, WI
5 states with two Sears stores: AK, CO, LA, MI, WA
5 states with three Sears stores: IL, MD, NC, NJ, VA
2 states with four Sears stores: HI, PA
5 states with five or more Sears stores: CA, FL, MA, NY, TX

OK, here's my list. It contains 90 Sears stores that, to my knowledge, are not yet closed or closing. Please let me know if any store on the list doesn't belong there, or if I left any store out.

I added back in one Puerto Rico store (Naranjito) because I couldn't find any evidence that it was closed or closing.

But then, after all of that, Jacksonville NC and Lake Grove NY Sears were confirmed as liquidating, which brings us down to 89 Sears stores, 133 total stores.

Yesterday, I cross-checked the Sears part of the map with the list of all "Sears Store"s on Sears.com, then against the two most recent USA Today closing lists and a few other media reports. This resulted in the corrections I posted here below.

Combining all of that, I get

86 Sears stores on map

+ 7 missing from map: White Plains NY, Miami (Coral Gables) FL, Pharr TX, Fort Collins CO, Thornton CO (Grand), Anchorage AK (Home & Life), Overland Park KS (Home & Life)

  • 2 on map that have closed: Brownsville TX, Aurora CO

Resulting total: 91 Sears stores that are still open and not yet confirmed as closing or liquidated

Combine with 44 Kmart stores, and the total of both formats is 135

I think the bottom line, as seen below, is that the Sears part of this map is riddled with errors and is vastly unreliable. Kmart seems to be accurate, although, for some reason, he still lists Burlington And Red Wood, for a total of 46 locations, while List Man has deleted those 2, for a total of only 44. I believe the latter is correct, as both of those locations have been verified as closing.

Never mind, Fajardo also closed (both Sears and Kmart, next door to each other). I missed it because USA Today misspelled it as FajaRoado.

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico is another town that has both a Sears and a Kmart (both listed on the map).

The map doesn't include two of the three Home & Life stores that were opened to great fanfare last year: Anchorage AK, Overland Park KS. (The map does include the third one in Lafayette LA.) Are those stores still open under that name, or have they been converted to Hometown or Outlet or some other name now?

The map also doesn't include these two stores that are listed on Sears.com and are not listed as closing in any reports that I have found:

Fajardo, Puerto Rico
Pharr, Texas

The map shows a Sears in Brownsville, Texas which has closed.

Of the two San Antonio Sears stores, I believe the map shows the wrong one staying open.

I believe Miami has both a Kmart and a Sears still open and not yet scheduled to close. The Miami Sears is not shown on the map.

The map still shows a Sears in Aurora, Colorado, which closed last year. I think Sears has two other Colorado stores (Fort Collins, Thornton) which are still open and are not on the map.

@lnn+13rGYUmH That link doesn't work?

@chq+13rGYUmH Of the top of my head, the only towns I can think of that have both are White Plains NY, & Silver Spring MD. Can you think of any others? Oh ya, NYC too. There's a Sears in Brooklyn, 2 Kmarts in Bronx, and now 1 remaining Kmart in Manhattan.

Key West, Florida, is a tiny place, but it still has one of each.

He also still has the Burlington WA Kmart and the one in CA that is closing, still on his map. That is why he has 46 Kmarts listed when there should only be 44. He might not be aware that those 2 have been called already.
