Thread regarding DIRECTV layoffs

Directv Layoffs 2026

My sources are saying a layoff is imminent - upto 20% workforce starting this month and many more to follow. Its going to be a hellish year as our freefall accelerates. We lost 300k subs in 3q 2025 alone. Gramps and Granny are keeping us afloat but that isn’t sustainable unless we’re in the business of selling Adult Diapers and Prune Juice. Save up them pennies and avoid purchasing that new car, my friends. Im hoping to exit soon myself

Last day today 4/3/26. We are becoming obsolete. People are working, but in the back of their mind there’s a nagging thought of, “I’m next.” These layoffs are random, unexpected and unpredictable all at the same time. Technicians are having to drive hours to get to customers. More layoffs to come. It’s just a matter of time.

@4mc those of us who moved from ATT to direct tv had a longer tenure then 90% of ATT workforce who lost their jobs between 2023-2025

I had the opportunity in 2016 to move to the Direct TV product while working at AT&T. Glad I did not take that job AT&T. At that time you could see the writing on the wall. DTV was on the decline as a product.

@29b DTV (TPG Capitol) doesn't have the funds nor financial expertise for such a venture. They need to stay in their lane.

Received my walking papers two days ago. I work in retention. Some others in support were also let go. This layoff is being done in waves and very quietly. Pathetic Bill!

So when is this layoff supposed to happen?

@201 The important factor to recognize is DIRECTV did spend money, those days ended after the acquisition. Everything that made DIRECTV special was stripped away under AT&T.

Under DIRECTV before the acquisition Dan York and his team on the Entertainment side knew how to recognize and take care of his people. I had the privilege to attend all of his offsite events and work under his leadership. After 2015 DIRECTV was never the same and became lost under poor leadership and management.

@1m4 I was speaking in reference to an actual experience while at an off site event held in Huntington Beach in ~2014, not mainstream media reports.

Employees approached Mike W with regards to Netflix at the offsite and he scoffed at the notion. He was focused solely on facilitating the sale to AT&T.

@1k2
You are mistaken. Mike White/DIRECTV CEO (2010 - 2014) tried to buy Hulu when it went up for sale in 2013, but the deal fell through:
https://variety.com/2013/digital/news/directv-after-failed-hulu-bid-seeks-another-internet-tv-play-1200572678/

It was previous DIRECTV CEO John Malone (2008-2010) who wanted to buy Netflix but Reed Hastings refused to sell. Netflix stock was $8.00 a share at that time.

in ~2014 Mike White had the opportunity to lead the acquisition in of Netflix, he scoffed at the thought. Clearly that decision was dire. He and the board left DIRECTV with a nice parachute pushing the AT&T acquisition. His legacy is marred, along with every leader who has taken control of the helm ever since. Truly sad and a direct reflection of management.

@r6 Mike White and the board sold out DIRECTV. That when the down fall truly began.

Sorry to hear everyone. As someone who was laid off roughly a year ago, I feel your pain and I don't mean that as a cliche I'll also say life goes on and I've been very happy. Miss some of the day to day after so many years there, certainly miss some people, but the uphill daily slog is not missed at all. Hang in there!

Received my notice today!! I wont reveal my Department since this impacted many in my team. Good luck to the rest of you. Thanks Bill and AT&T for destroying this once great company and my 13 yrs of service :-(
I’ll never understand why a Phone Company and Equity Firm bought this company in the first place (smfh)

@eg 100% correct. Couldn't have said this better myself! Just remember Bill and the exec teams raking in millions as they decide who to cut next. And whatever they say about the CIO leaving, that obviously was not a voluntary resignation. This place is basically a slow sinking ship.

You are correct Sarah. We are cooked. Our brand and product is obsolete. Any manager telling us otherwise is just lip service. We are the Radio Shack of this era. A slow death till we go belly up or sold to the next billion dollar su-ka’

why would you exit if you think you will be let go? Take the package and leave. My buddies that were let go last year got 6 months' severance plus benefits.
