Thread regarding Sungard Availability Services layoffs

Reality is there is no severance

No law, no entitlement or anything that they have to pay severance if people get laid off. In the US its just a nice gesture. The company has no money to pay severance and a buyer, if they get one, will just terminate people since the business model of products has no value. A buyer will hang onto people for the short term and do something with the customers and finish the terminations. If you are hanging on for severance you need to face reality. SG was giving 1 week per year when they had some money, now that they have none, there is nothing to give.

@2bfn+1gZOt0kp makes a good point.

@2hkk+1h65EGDe I am getting too old for this anyway. Gonna retire a few years before the retirement age. House paid for during my tenure with Comdisco thru SG!! Gotta look at the happy side right?

Whoever stayed with SunGard beyond 2015 and was looking for career growth you were and still are delusional. The writing was on the wall back in 2010. Shame on you.

My career ended. My RS site in Florida is going away. No sign on bonus or job offer for me. I am too old and at SG for too long.

@1mxj+1h65EGDe Seriously, sounds like more recovery dinosaurs gasping for breath as they sink into La Brea.

Better than? You mean less than, assuming you've put in the time.
Also - why not both. They're not mutually exclusive.

You know what's better than severance, no matter where you are? Sign on bonus! Go get one and you'll have a new job to boot!

Yeah, we don't get to hold companies hostage. But on the other hand, we aren't required to give them any notice when we take off, either. Must suck to work in the UK.

I've said it once. I'll say it again - it must suck to work in US.
