Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

shrink the "status collector" class by 90%

If Q wants to have a shot at navigating this inflection point, they need to wipe the slate clean and bring in new leadership at ALL levels. This means 90% of status collector class needs to be removed.

Companies rarely get a chance to reinvent itself. The biggest objectors to such a pivot are going to be the people who are currently benefiting from the existing system.

Adapt and grow the company or stagnate and ki-l the company.

If you don't believe Q can make these tough decisions, just look for another job.

The CEO is a status collector. You need to eliminate the roots of all evil.

@1irl+1oAGbcgw is status collector same as hiring manager? If yes, don't bite the hand that feeds you as he hired you to perform a job. Even in faang, the title of sw dev manager collects status. If not refering to hiring manager, then status collector doesn't have much say in lower level engineer promotions - that's mostly under the control of your direct lead.

No 1:1s, no status reports at competitor #1.

Copied from an earlier thread .... which defines them reasonably accurately
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A status collector is usually a senior staff or principal engineer /manager or director. They are generally out of touch with technical work as they spend most of their time collecting status of features / bugs from people who do the work and report it to their higher ups. Their primary goal is in being connected to other peer status collectors or being in a clique that will protect them during difficult times like now.

Most of them are really good at making architectural block diagrams littered with acronyms that junior engineers are not exposed to. They also act as the sole interface to peer teams and higher ups, there by ensuring their presence/importance is known while controlling the growth potential of junior engineers.

In a growing market, nobody wants to rock the boat. Status collectors report to other status collectors and hence they get away with it.

Agree with OP. Insiders also know that the bloat happened outside of the engineering groups. There is the status collector class and then there is the (here is a new term) "status presenter" class. The status presenter class has had quite some bloat recently. Another point is that the low volume low margin BU's (like auto and compute) have added to the bloat. Needs to be seen if they can contribute to the bottomline, but right now, they are burning through cash and justifying it saying that they are growing.
