Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

I’m worried about more layoffs beyond those 500+

Once we are in there will be more reorgs and adjustments, and I can only assume that many of us would be on the chopping block against COP employees. I hope I’m wrong about this, but that’s what usually starts to happen after a merger. I actually do like my job, and would like to keep it in the foreseeable future.

Spot on assessment of those Ensign knobs. They thought way too highly of themselves and few of them lasted.

@apf+1vhZk6Uw MRO would have actually been better off without 90% of Ensign employees. Most people there were 80% hubris and 20% usefulness. Either way, I’m glad I left before this buyout because everyone is boned and I’m LMFAO.

If you’re looking for certainty in oil and gas you’re working in the wrong industry. Look at the HES group. They underwent a restructure. Some people stayed and SEVERAL people left. Reorgs and layoffs are part of the business.

@2mrv+1vhZk6Uw I was actually replying to the comment where someone commented that speculation is that Conoco is having layoffs to push people out the door. That's not my comment nor my argument.

To respond to you, I personally know COP employees who indeed are going to leave over it. I'm not one of them. And I'm not responding to the rest of your comment. I don't know whether there will be enough people to stay the needle or not. What I do know is COP certainly isn't looking at layoffs in any attempt to save MOC employees. Get it? Good.

@2whg+1vhZk6Uw - You put too much weight on the WFH benefit. People will be upset for sure, but in the end a good paying job with benefits is more important than trying to prove a point. Conoco could care less if you quit, and the only one you will prove a point to is yourself. There is no way I would quit my job just because I had to go into the office. I think there will be a few that do, but no where near the amount needed to keep others working.

COP will take out a lot of overhead. Truthfully, MRO overhead was ridiculous in certain departments (legal, comms, HES are a few). If you work in Houston, update your resume. If you really want to stay at COP, try to make that known to them, but also start looking. Wish you luck.

COP is ending WFH. People will quit over it. Doesn't mean they'll take on more MOC people because of it though. Especially if you look at the timing. MOC layoffs are gonna happen at the very end of 2024 most likely. WFH ends Jan 6 for COP. If people leave it just means fewer layoffs for COP ultimately.

Speculation is COP is ending the hybrid work schedule as a way to push COP people out the door.

They already told us that MRO was going to have big layoffs, so hopefully the WARN wasn't a surprise to anyone. It also isn't very useful, since it just states that expected layoffs will be above the minimum required for a WARN.

They had to give a WARN notice of a mass layoff determined by 500+ being layed off. An exact number wasn't given but it'll be much higher than 500.

What isn't in the news is layoffs for COP employees being hinted at 1st quarter. Sorry, but they won't be bringing in a bunch of MOC employees when they're already planning their own layoffs. They won't unnecessarily inflate the number they eventually report. Better to let MOC take the hit.

Unless your function is unique and won't be replicated at all, as an MOC employee I'd count on being let go.

Really what gave you that impression? Maybe the fact that there are around 1800 employees and less than 300 will be left…breaking news I tell you.

You get what you give. As a previous Ensign employee, I hope that COP treats you guys just as well as you treated us. I'll never forget a very smarmy DK coming to our building for an introduction and flatly telling us, "Come or don't come, we'll be fine without you."

Keep thinking that.

That’s not necessarily true. Usually there written agreements to protect marathon employees post acquisition for that very reason.

Most Marathon employees are going to be dumped. At least that’s the word from the ConocoPhillips side.
