Paying for required training

How is DeVry circumventing the legal requirement to pay employees for manditory training such as CBC201?

the DevryTech training had the same question asked in six different ways on webex. LB must have really really liked her webex.

The Dept of Labor states that an employee's time spent in training should be compensable unless 4 specific criteria are met. (https://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs53.htm)

My situation meets none of these criteria. I wish I could pursue it, but I still need the job.....

That CBC training was infuriating. My friend, an adjunct, is the kind of guy who does what he is told and never really complains much, but he went on a tirade when we were going through that BS. DeVry actually managed to push one of the world's most patient people over the edge and that is not easy to do.

He posted this regarding the experience:

To 1yks- I specifically asked about being compensated for the training and was told that there was no compensation but that the training would help me to be a better instructor. Given DeVry’s awful reputation this is a highly unlikely value proposition.

The subject of pay came up when I was with DVU--I was a "trainer" for them as a faculty person. I had to go into campus on a Saturday morning to teach adjuncts how to use the learning management system.

No one got paid, including me--it was expected as part of the endless, unlimited list of task that fell under "service." The poor adjuncts, too, were grumpy campers...no pay. no. no. no.

I don't know how they wriggled out of that one.

To 1lop: it’s good to see someone take a stand for what’s right and also voice what all of us are thinking. That training is over the top, wasteful, and abusive. You’ll likely do better elsewhere, anyway. Management needs to feel the pushback and know that people won’t tolerate this.

This is where I draw the line. I have simply refused to take the training unless I am compensated. Based on responses from management, there will be no compensation for 40+ hours of required CBC201 training. Therefore I am not going to take the training and I encourage all of you reading this post to do likewise. The DeVry managers need to face a mass desertion as contract employees refuse to be abused any further.

I not at a point in my life where I am willing to give my time for free especially when the asking organization is a for-profit corporation that is paying its officers millions of dollars every year. How stupid do these managers think I am?

Not taking the training means that I will no longer teach for DeVry and I am ok with that, as I am sure that I will find other opportunities where I am treated with respect. DeVry has finally hit bottom with its unethical practices towards faculty.
