Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Were americans layed off

if you got layed off and your an american, you should be pi---d. this is an abuse of the h1b visa rules. h1b visa holders need to be layed off first. the program exists because of shortage of american engineers. so why are they laying off americans before h1b visa people

I do not question American PhD quality from top notch departments (yes, departments, not universities... my colleagues from Tucson prepared high quality scientists despite second-tier university rating). The problem is the quantity of PhDs and the median quality of them. If the university cannot support original research for 100 people, then, perhaps, they should not produce 100 so-called "PhD" rather than dilute the classic definition of PhD.

To the one that called me "co---e"... you are barking at the wrong tree. My grandfather was White Russian and was shot by commies. My extended family was dissidents and helped to bring down commies from power, and that's how I'm here: political refugee, not the H1B. USA is my home for most of my life and I want to keep my home clean, which means to call sh... sh... when I see sh...

Hello sir @7vkj+1lzDMuzp

I am the American PhD who left the comment. I do believe there is deviation of qualities among American PhDs. And I also believe America is strong because of our diversity and inclusion, that's why I don't hate H1B. I left the comment because people who have never been through PhD process may underestimate it as a general education process, or a repeated and meaningless labor. However, I would like to insist that most of PhD graduates still earn the degree properly nowadays, giving the fact that the fruitful margin of research continuously shrinks as technology and science advance day by day. It's barely possible to publish on distinguished journal with sole facts nowadays, neither possible to have significant discoveries without teamwork.

Please ignore the comment below, a decent people wouldn't judge others by nationality, ethnicity or ideology, you have my full respect.

American PhD does not have much value. It's just a cheap labor for grant-sucking "professors" in a highly corrupt academic system.

From a Soviet Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics. I had to do original research published in 10 peer reviewed papers without co-authors, either translated by Springer Publishing, or in English in Elsevier journals. More than 10 Conference presentations. The dissertation went for expert review into 3rd party independent research facility and defended in yet 3rd party independent Academic Council and finally reviewed by Higher Certification Committee. It took me 2 attempts to defend the thesis: first attempt was aborted once a minor factual mistake was uncovered in one chapter.

Compare that to boilerplate process of minting American PhDs wholesale at gazillions of universities. No wonder companies need hundreds of PhDs to perform TD that startups can do with a dozen of people.

I didn't really want to comment on H1B visa workers since I'm fairly neutral about it.

But if you want to taunt the value of PhD, you'd better have one.

H1B employees are modern day slaves that corporations taken advantage of. The H1B is for a specific job, so they cannot change companies easily, and corporations just add more and more work because the H1B employee has the option of accepting the work or going home.

It is corporate greed that pushes the H1B program.

the problem is, Americans can find a job in the US, but H1-B holders can't that easy. Moreover, to have the H1-B workers you pay ~10k dollars to the lawyers and the process takes when you are lucky about a year. the H1-B lottery is capped at 85K people and you can't do more than that. You are fighting against all the other corporations that want specialized and trained people. If you lay them off, you won't be able to find a good replacement without them.

also, don't forget, if they are coming from another country, speaking poor English, and they are able to beat you, it's not them the problem

Please refresh my memory on how much technology we steal
from those "advanced" countries that have 4 to 5 times our population size.

Those doctoral degrees used to mean something 30-40 years ago when
those universities had higher standards and politicked less.
They led to possibly a tenure-track professorship.
Those days are long gone.

H1B visa folk use those degree programs as a way to gain entrance into the U.S.
while those professors use them for cheap disposable labor.
You are basically pipetting for a professor.
You'll have my respect when you publish 4 or 5 papers in a reputable journal.
Also you mistake what the purpose of a doctoral degree is for.
It is not for you to memorize "advanced" knowledge but to train you
to do independent research on your own.

This argument maybe holds water in TD but is not true in the HVM Fabs and departments like IT. I have worked with many H1B workers over the years at Micron that do not possess any special skills that could not be hired locally.

"Semiconductors typically need research experience to advance the technology. Very few people pursue doctorates and have the skill-sets to perform those job roles. That’s why H1B is needed, as there aren’t enough American workers to fill those roles. H1Bs are not cheap, the company needs to prove they are paying above certain wages for their specialized skills. The whole premise of this thread is short-sighted and uninformed."

H1b is double abuse.
Corporations abuse it to import cheap labor.
After that corporations abuse that very labor they imported. For certain places of origin this may last for literally decades.

Micron likes to present itself as a tech company, but it’s really a shoestring operation hellbent on maximizing profits while spending as absolutely little as possible. Budgets are constantly cut, and your human capital (read: extra hours and stress) is expected to make up the difference.

Working here is toxic. If youre stuck on night shift dont expect to ever get off nights, or get any type of advancement training. All the special event are held on day shift and they ignore nights. Your opinion doesnt matter, your input doesnt matter. They constantly make the job harder and harder to do but expect you to do it faster. Your job description/expectations change daily. They put you where ever they feel like regardless if you have the skills or not then punish you if you dont succeed at something you dont have the skillset for. Terrible place to work, especially if youre stuck on nights.
