Forget Bro Culture: It's the Lady Mafia That's Insidious

I just left Nike after a decade of hard work and 'Highly Successful' annual reviews. "Who leaves Nike?" my friends ask, incredulous. My response: You leave Nike when it more closely resembles 'Hunger Games' than it does a company with integrity. Most interesting—particularly in light of Nike's #metoo narrative that's trumpeted in the likes of the NYT— is the emergence of the Lady Mafia: those Nike women who happily cut other women off at the knees to ensure their own enriched revenue stream. You know them: they're the ones sitting next to you in the meeting, checking their Nike stock on their phone. The irony—and rampant duplicity—would be laughable, if not for the betrayal and loss it represents.

Good luck, ladies. You can have it.

Excellent post!

I experienced my first "Lady Mafia" about four years into my Nike career, a horrid woman. I had a reputation of being a hard worker by my peers and management and was referred to the job. She came along a few months after me. I think she was jealous of my reputation and made it her sole objective to ruin me. The things she did were reprehensible, I didn't realize people could be so mean for no apparent reason.

Then in my ninth year at Nike I came across another one, this one was a little different. She needed the acceptance of men and had absolutely no self confidence. It was amazing that she had actually gotten to the level she was because she was a close to an id–t as I'd ever come across.

Ah, yes. We referred to them as the “Handbag Mafia” but I’m sure I could name several of them. Plenty of nepotism to go around amongst them to make sure they’re always protected all the way up to the highest levels. It’s sad the way they’ve poisoned the WOM group because I believe the core of that group and most of its members is still well meaning. If I ever called someone a c**trace on a conference call, I’d have been walked out of the office the same day. Yet the person I witnessed do that got a promotion and kept their job...

Ladies'-and I use the term loosely, Mafia. Perfect name. Epitome of The Mean Girls club. Vicious, self righteous, foul mouthed women who act like the "metoo" men therefore are in that same club. I've actually heard my Director come out of her office slandering a manager she just got off the phone with, calling her names and claiming that it was time for that manager to move on and she would see to it.

Gossip and hate speech were a daily occurrence. Ive witnessed the take down and kill of some very good people and previously valued employees. Women were the targets, never the guys. Who would they have for drinking buddies each night if they took down the guys?

After each 'work trip' they would talk and laugh incessantly and loudly about how drunk they got each night and laughing about whose turn it was to expense the night's bill and then bragging that she approves them all anyway. And always using foul language. It puzzles me how directors have such a limited vocabulary. Never heard anything else about the 'work trip', like....what were the business results? Or for that matter, what were the goals of the trip.

So sad to see what's become of what used to be a great company to work for.

I had many great years there and for that I am forever greatful.

I left last year and never looked back. Don't be afraid. You are better than that and simply dont deserve such bullying and also don't need that stuff in your life. No one should have to go to work each day in fear of being the next victim.

Believe me....You can do it!!!

The lady mafia's at Nike are beyond horrible, there are certain groups that are untouchable, like the material org. The directors are bullying their employees and there is absolutely no accountability.

It is so sad to read these stories. No one deserves to be treated this way. I just don't understand it. What could be such an amazing place is nothing close to it. HR and ER are beyond awful and no one can seem to touch certain groups and people. As I wrote that I am glad to be gone the way in which it was done is unforgivable. You are people too. Someday it will be your turn.

So agree with post from “ @U3gdo1L-1rfu” my manager was not only not qualified, she had the talent to lie without shame to protect herself and derail someone’s career. She made my life a living hell, not a day went by under her leadership that I went home happy. She hired under qualified best friends from previous company to work for her. She supported and created lies and stories and partnered with ER to end my career at Nike. She’s been at NIKE for measly 2 years and has managed to get rid of all the employees who reported to her and were honest enough to complain to HR about her. Yet she continues to work as a Director in NSW. Finally one day I had enough and I gave in my resignation. I will never ever forgive her or the horrible people in Nike ER and HR who could not get rid of this evil person. And yes what goes around always comes around, one day she will pay for mistreating and bullying an innocent person. I’m glad I don’t have to tolerate her terrible and crass humor, nasty jokes, and foul language. AP money does not buy you class, you can try all you want, what a sad and pathetic life you have.

Nike is the incredible shrinking company, contracting under the immaturity of its child managers. The Lady Mafia exists, even as the old guard gets let go within the berm and at its tentacle locations globally. This storied company has been reduced to a farce... a cross between Hunger Games and Spectre. And it's No Company For Old Men, if you look at the demographic of those who got laid off this past year.

Ah, yes. They are all around. The few women at Nike at " the top", who feel so superior to have shattered into the mysterious Boys Club, that it's a bit of a throne for them. The Lady Mafia not only check the stock price in meeting s, they are the ones who are sugar sweet and then tear other women down behind their backs. They are protective of their male sponsors, and feel threatened if another woman gets close to him - as male sponsorship is the proven formula. They hide behind a W of N network, while secretly wondering what female is their next threat in the race up the ladder - as space for women up at the top is limited. And, while men throughout the Berm have been protecting and enabling and promoting each other for decades, the Lady Mafia doesn't realize that their poisonous behavior and fear based leadership tactics, actually perpetuates Bro culture, further mitigating their own opportunity.

Never had a worse boss with her crocodile tears while sticking a knife in my back. Totally unqualified for the director position. I can only thank Nike now because it motivated me to do what I am meant to do. Adios.
