Thread regarding Sears layoffs

45 Kmarts now, 34 in the US.

Never fear, List Man is here, Kmart closings are coming near! List Man is back, everything is going to be fine now. OK, I have been working on this for a while now, and this is what I have been able to come up with:

I was able to verify with links, and bounce the following 7 Kmarts: KDH NC, West Long Branch NJ, Vegas NV, Mcallen TX, Loveland CO, Farmington NM, and Hobbs NM. 7 Beautiful closings!

Yes, I am aware that many on here have already ditched the additional 5 stores of NYC, Des Plaines IL, Burlington WA, Holyoke MA, & Red Wood City CA. However, while that is indeed likely, I never remove stores off my master command list without concrete proof.

So, as a compromise, I called those last mentioned 5 stores, and was able to confirm all of them as closing, except Burlington WA.
So I removed all of the above from my master command list except Burlington, for now.

Should anyone locate a link to those or any additional closures, please post it below, and upon verification, I will delete Said store from the master list.

We are now at 45 Kmarts total, 34 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well:

This is a super out of date thread. I have no idea why you posted to it. The count now is 34 Kmarts, 25 in the US states.

Sounds promising, but apparently they still have to vote on it Next Week? So do you think I should count it now, or wait until then? Sounds like it's 98% certain but maybe I should wait until the city makes it official?

Minneapolis is at least the third Kmart i know of that is closing because the property owner bought out the lease early. Others are Assembly Square in Somerville MA, and Penn Plaza in NYC.

Kmart in Minneapolis is closing "by June 30". The city bought out the lease for $9.1 million, after three years ago buying the land under it for $8 million. The lease would have run through 2053.

Chestnut Hill-based WS Development is the current leaseholder on the 26-acre Capetown Plaza, which is anchored by one of the few remaining —->Kmart<—- stores in the state. The property is owned by the town of Barnstable but under the care of the Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission.

Last summer, the company was the winning bidder to redevelop the aging shopping center, entering into a 49-year lease that begins in 2024.

It plans to develop a $45 million, 300,000-square-foot lifestyle center — called The Landing at Hyannis — that may include retail stores, restaurants, entertainment, office space, hospitality and service establishments, and fitness and medical centers in buildings that may have multiple stories.

My bad, I meant 6 states have 1 store each, not 7! Those are, from west to east, MT, ND, MN, MI, NH, MA. These are the ones I would look at for removal soon! Minnesota, being probably the main hangup, for now, based on their lease situation, but hopefully they can get out of that soon. :)

Being that Burlington was now proven, List Man Jack has renewed his master command list. We now stand at 44 Kmarts, 33 of which are in the US. You're welcome, cheers:

@5gce+13ocJ1kg That might very well be the case, it's just that I saw no evidence of it in that link. It seems like it's abot historical museums or something, which, while interesting, made zero mention of any Kmart property that I could find. Now I'll admit, that about halfway through, I switched to just skimming through it (frankly out of boredom), so I might have missed the reference to any Kmart property.

All that being Said, I'm somewhere between 99.9 and 100% sure they will close, because historically, all the straggling onesie state-stores eventually close. This is in a Summer-Beach town, that is only really populated about 3 Months per Year. It will close very soon.

Hyannis is NOT yet a closing store. But it is a store that I expect will close, because the master leaseholder wants to redevelop the property.

The master leaseholder for the Hyannis MA Kmart shopping center plans to redevelop the property, so I expect that one will also close in due time.

@2qme+13ocJ1kg True, but part of it I think is that IKEA most likely pays their vendors.

It is possible to run a nationwide chain with a small number of far-flung locations. iKEA does it quite well. But I doubt Sears or Kmart will ever learn anything from IKEA.

Still seems id–tic to keep those Kmarts in Burlington, Hamilton, Minot, Minneapolis, and Marshall still open. They are so isolated! I was really hoping they would be closing in this round, oh well.

@lww+13ocJ1kg 45 Kmarts left of 2,486 stores that were open at Kmart's peak. 45 divided by 2,486 is roughly 1.8%. So we have lost over 98% of Kmart stores since then....

Thank you for keeping this up-to-date. Please note that both "Edgewater" (MD) and "Westwood" (NJ) are misspelled as two-word names; and both are spelled with one word.
