Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Where have all the HotShots landed?

So where have all the #HotShots landed after ExxonMobil and how are they doing? Well, I will start with myself. I landed at Amazon AWS and love it here, making more money and yes my total compensation still exceeds XOMs even after considering XOMs 10% yearly contributions towards the pension. The only thing that tied me to XOM was the perceived job security and stability while sacrificing the pay. Should have jumped the ship sooner before, but oh well better late than never. So BK, thank you for suggesting us to leave. How about the other #hotshots? Where all have you landed and how's it going?

Resigned from XOM in 2022. Best thing I’ve ever done. Took a long vacation to decompress from this the toxic place. Landed a dream job in clean energy a few months later. Had several job offers to choose from. Compensation with the new company is about the same but they offer more vacation. On an hourly basis, I’m way ahead because I rarely work weekends and evenings. Culture and leadership is 1000% better.

EMIT folks, are you all excited and ready to join EMTEC?

Former EMIT here. Went to a vendor almost a year ago, another large F100 company not in tech.

Yes, I’m happier, yes, I’m being paid more, yes, I’m glad to be out.

The biggest thing for me, though, is professional growth. Compared to EMIT I get to learn more, do more, make more of an impact, and be recognized and rewarded for it. Kind of like how EM treats well performing engineers, to be honest. It’s too bad they can’t afford the same opportunities for IT folk.

@3oze It’s a fantasy for washed-up O&G employees with zero tech skills (i.e., most of you).

The posts here by people making this claim conclusively show that they know nothing about the hiring process or compensation structure at a typical tech company.

I have better things to do than scroll whatever inflated BS people are posting on LinkedIn.

It isn’t a fantasy to get hired by tech. Just go to LinkedIn and search yourself. You can filter for people who are currently at Apple/Microsoft/etc. and were formerly at ExxonMobil. Using just those examples, it is several hundred.

Went to another major. 20% raise, extra week of vacation, RSUs and a signing bonus. Only downside is worse health/dental insurance.

The funniest thing is that they look to EM as the people that have it all figured out.

@3lfo EM employees, especially those nearing retirement, do not have the skills that tech companies, to the extent that they’re hiring anyone, are hiring for right now.

The people here posting their ridiculous fantasies about being hired by FAANGs for massive pay increases are just coping. It’s obvious from what they’re saying in their posts that they’ve never worked in tech and don’t know anyone who does.

The brightest and greatest (aka kiss@sses) think does not resist that other people have a better future after leaving by force or by own decision from EM going to small companies like: Raytheon, Samsung or SpaceX. The sad and most disgusting part of this website is when people make a comment or point a problem; the defender of the faith coming out from under their boss desk, of course, defending the company like they own the company. when everybody knows that they just represent a number to the board.

Landed at another O&G company. Publicly traded. Offered lower salary than at XOM but matched RSU's I gave up to vest in 1 year.

Stock is up 64% and just cashed out the stock. Also got a raise of 9% plus a bonus of 20%. Making way more than I ever expected at XOM in just 2 years.

@2ovs+1mfZVkk7 I know several people who did leave for crazy gains at AWS and Azure (a few I know confirmed to get over 100% increase). I would have myself if I wasn’t already handcuffed. They didn’t require leetcode coding tests as they weren’t developers, they were system integrators, architects, solution managers, etc. Their layoffs are pretty negligible numbers considering how big their workforce is and it’s unlike if you’re laid off at XOM, if you’re laid off from either of those you have tons of options to go to next. Their layoffs also aren’t affecting most relevant positions, it’s cutting fluff and really bad performers. It would be like if we didn’t PIP for 10 years and then came in and cut the bottom 10%. We all know that would not be a crushing blow if you have any skills

Reality: EM employees are not landing jobs in the tech sector, and they aren’t getting the 50%, 80%, or 200% raises after leaving they keep claiming. It is pure fantasy being deployed as a coping mechanism.

Almost nobody working at EM has the technical or leadership skills that major or even minor tech companies hire for, especially now while they’re laying people off in droves. Almost all tech companies have skills assessment tests (ex. debugging code) that have to be taken to advance in the hiring process. Few if any of you would pass the assessments.

Get f’n real and stop wasting bandwidth with this “I left EM for a god-like job in tech” BS.

The company's total compensation has always been less than the market (even in Oil and Gas). Cosondering all else equivalent, the only things it had going for it was the perceived job stability which is now gone. Add that with benefit cuts, stagnating salaries, poor raises, outsourcing, and utmost toxicity the company doesn't have much to offer new hires other than simply a job for a paycheck on a yearly contract.

@2lbc+1mfZVkk7 it wasn't trash, but the total compensation also wasn't market competitive as HR and mgmt. frequently claimed it to be. Having worked at two companies now after XOM, 1 oil and gas and 1 tech, both of their compensation packages I was offered and was able to negotiate were still higher than what I made at XOM. Even considering the pension aspects to the mix, XOM total compensation is lackluster and nothing to be proud about.

Kind of all over the place here. On one hand, I would say 99% of XOM employees would not be qualified for significant roles in big tech. That's not a secret. For the very few who did make that jump, I would have to wonder why they were at XOM in the first place.

Regarding the comment on people going to work at smaller firms... Most companies are in fact smaller in headcount than XOM. That's not really a bad thing. It's actually what XOM is ultimately aiming for itself. To reduce headcount, by alot.

So the idea of considering the size of the firm as the biggest factor in a career decision.....just no.... You can easily find companies that regurlarly generate more profit per employee (some by a wide margin).

@OP Again with this “I left Exxon for a tech company and got a 3,000% raise” nonsense.

As with all other posts of this type, you’re FoS. I’m not taking the trouble to list why or how, since you’ll all just keep repeating it anyway.

To the question, many former Exxon employees have found work for lower pay in process facilities or small firms in the greater Houston area. Apparently many of the people who were PIPed were so desperate to remain employed that they took lowball offers for roles typically filled by college grads or early career types.

@ucr+1mfZVkk7 your 10% estimate may apply to an average performer like you, but for above average performing HotShots it is a lot more. Remember it is a final average pay plan….. Talk to your financial advisor (if you cant figure it out on your own) to better understand how our pension plan works.

@hbl+1mfZVkk7, if XOM was that "the best" employer it once used to be you and likes of you at XOM wouldn't have to put every little thing happening on LinkedIn convincing others. You wouldn't have cut 401k for a year. You wouldn't have paid crumy severance to those that you laid off. You wouldn't have got kicked out of DOW, on and on. You would have better health plans for employees. Now go back on LI and keep convincing others differently. Perfect example of koolaid drinker you are.

@hbl+1mfZVkk7, you definitely sound like that grown up kids that stays with parents because you haven't figured out life yet. This clearly shows that you lack basic mathematic and investment skills. If you had those two skills you would take charge then let XOM paying you to stay with then with the carrot in front of you, because you can not self support yourselves. You think 10% contributions towards your XOM pension by XOM is the best thing after sliced bread? Reach out to your financial advisor (if you can't figure out on your own) and ask him if you made 15% more somewhere else and invested that or 10% on your own what would be the outcome. If not, keep drinking koolaid and die prematurely.

The fact you feel the need to belittle random people on an anonymous message board shows how toxic the remainers are in this place.

I left 1 year ago.

For me the game changers are working from home, unlimited vacations, and trusting my bosses.

Regarding why I come here again after 1 year, it is because I want to inspire people to leave EM. To use the ex-girlfriend analogy, first she didn't dumped me, I dumped her, and second, she's destroying the life of another dude, so I am reaching out to him (not to her) to inspire and encourage him to dump her too.

Bro...you sound like the ex that got dumped but keep sending messages to family and posting stuff on social media hoping you'll get noticed and get your ex's attention. Meanwhile your ex girl doesn't see your posts because she unfollowed you and frankly doesn't care because she had already upgraded before she even dumped you. Sadly, you were the only one that didn't know about her creepin'.
