Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Another Confirmation for Layoffs

I received word today that I need to make a mandatory cut of 15% to my team. This is in Digital. Haven’t heard when it’s going to take effect. They don’t really care who I choose, just said to say they’re underperforming. Regardless of who I choose, this is going to be gutting. I guess it’s the hatchet and not the scalpel this time around.

How so?

Learn how to speed talk. If you can repeat the letters "AI" @ 300wpm you are protected. Make sure the messaging is as incoherent as possible. Don't bother with unnecessary syllables, pauses, or long breaths. Just chant. Or record yourself saying "AI" play at 5x and move your lips super fast. Senior leadership will keep you on payroll.

" mark all of them (even the ones sticking around for now) as Talent Concerns"

Will the employees know that they were marked as talent concerns?

@2mfr+1sLe1O4l yeah, they are ki-ling the managers and the team members. Treated like cr-p. Just a row in a spreadsheet and managers have to take the sh-t, and then get laid off.

They didn’t even consider the hybrid vs remote angle. The names I’d submitted were all pretty similar, pay wise. They just took some of them and left others. Then said to mark all of them (even the ones sticking around for now) as Talent Concerns. So, they may just take them in the next wave.

@OP
Any idea why 2 on your list were not accepted? Any factors such as hybrid vs remote, moonshot goals, low grade level vs high grade level, expensive workers vs cheap workers, something else?

There's a difference between making things more efficient, and cutting so many people that there's literally no one left to do necessary work. The cuts over the last two years have gutted not only my org, but many of the teams I work with across organizations. Larger projects, and even trivial tasks (that while trivial, are still necessary to the job), are at a standstill. The few people left in these orgs are spread so thin that it feels like things are moving at a snails pace.

So if they do plan to cut that many more people over the next two years, goodness help us. To me, that'd be a decision to sell off parts of the company. Or decide to ki-l off products, services, support, etc. to allow for that large of a culling.

The number I've heard from very reliable sources in upper mgmt is a 25% global headcount reduction in phases over the next two years. The goal is to go from about 120k to 90k employees.

That's a pretty huge number so the fun is just getting started. My sense is that they won't do this quarterly (3k-4k each time) because it could generate perpetual negative headlines. Doing it weekly/monthly spread across all orgs seems more likely to keep these eye popping numbers manageable.

Of course, wall st loves layoff announcements and headlines like these could result in some upward pops too unless revenue is tanking at a faster clip which might be the reason for these layoffs in the first place. Who knows. But I do know the 25% number is legit... as of now, which can always change for better or worse.

OP here. I don't really care whether people believe me or not. I also don't particularly care whether or not you believe I'm in management. I'm sharing what I hear and, like with every other rumour on this site, you can believe it or disregard.

On that subject, I have now heard that the layoff is supposed to happen the 3rd week of August, with notification at the end of July. Could be that's just for Dell Digital. Not privy to any information from other orgs. Also don't know if every team is equally being hit with a 15% cut: from the list I'd provided, two were not chosen, taking my total percentage below 15%, but my direct manager said they were making up for it elsewhere. However, I AM certain that other teams in my org structure will be impacted in at least some capacity.

Thanks for sharing. I tend to think there are really good people on this board who actually care. Sure there are a few trolls but I think a lot are well meaning. Thank you for sharing and good luck - I am sure that’s a tough decision to make.

15% or higher. If you don’t think that’s true then wait till August. Remember. They’re trying to get down below 100K mark organizationally. That’s the motivation.

I call BS. Like YES there are layoffs coming, and YES it will affect all departments (god willing some “leadership” will finally catch the ax.) But to say they told you to “get them listed as under performers” is a crock. They lay off high performers and lower tier equally. That’s what’s so damn frustrating about Dell. No one is safe. Hybrid, remote, good or bad at your job. There’s no rhyme or reason to the cuts. They are coming in August, they do every year now, but you don’t need to pretend to be some manager to say that.

No manager will go on a layoff site and announce that he has this mandate before anything even takes place.

Im just an IC, not OP. This doesn't sound right, 15% is steep to cut from digital if the overarching plan is to cut more soft roles in marketing to 'replace with AI'. This post sounds like a boogie man unless OP's team is just really underperforming
