Thread regarding 3M layoffs

RTW?

Heard today that PG14 and up will be required to return to work. Can anyone confirm?

It's very easy to request and get a badge in badge out report on any employee if you are their leader. Same for access and activity on the computer. At least hours logged on and any emails, etc.

Remember what Bill's long-term plan is: break up 3M in many smaller business aligned units. Much easier if you have people leave and then not replace them when the spins happen. He can sell wall street that he's making the new pieces of 3M "leaner" and cash in 10s of millions.

It’s too bad a selling point was WYW to offset all the other negative aspects of working at 3M. Loss of LTI, no raises, poor management and constant fear of job loss. No mandatory RTW that serves no real purpose. When the job market turns around I hope everyone who can will leave. The only people who want people sitting in the office are the COC so they have staff milling around to make them feel important like kings of a kingdom. What happens to families who don’t have day care any longer and that savings is offsetting the loss in pay? What about my hour plus commute that is just my wasted time and no productive time? Where am I going to take my teams calls with no quiet rooms and no walls or cubicles? No one wants to be forced to come back.

The standard to get them from Security at least used to be extremely low.

It used to be that all that was needed was an approval email from the 2nd level manger to the employee in question. I don't know what the approval level required is today.

In my country (relatively large subsidiary), they downsized the main office to about 1/3 the seats based on number of employees. There are only 4 meeting rooms and 4 quiet pods for the entire company. At most they can do with RTW is 1.67 days based on available hot desk to employee ratio. It's so bad that many have taken to even using the lunch/pantry area tables to work at because of insufficient hot desks. I have even turned up at the office to find every spot taken up and no quiet pods remaining, so I had to hold my meetings in my car for privacy reasons in the company carpark!

This is false. Most of the main offices are already sold or are for sale outside the usa. This includes canada

In many OUS locations, our state offices have been closed. They still retain the country main office, but for the other states, you can't RTW if there is no office!

I understand in some countries, the head office lease was given up, therefore the regional VPs and directors are justified to wfh. Don't think they will lease back the properties as work office again. How lucky!

I believe badge reports needed a justification....akin to "probable cause". Something potentially serious and not just curiosity. Re: the RTO mandate though, that may change things.

Yes, badge reports are super easy to get. Even 10 years ago all it took was an email to get a spreadsheet of any employee's badge activity going back a year. I'm sure HR and Security will automate it now.

If this is the case, must be for all, including all “distant-remote” people that were hired over last many years… tons of fully remote executives at 3M.

Those regional senior mgrs and above should return to office instead of enjoying their afternoon naps at home.
