60 FLS Sears and Kmart Stores NOT up for lease

DISCLAIMER – Nit pickers may say this is not an accurate count, READ the article before whining, nobody is claiming 60 is the official current number. The point of the article is someone went to the effort to verify how many stores are open and NOT available for lease.

The small formats are officially classified under the Hometown umbrella now. No one can quite get a bead on the Hometown numbers because a lot of them just close up shop without telling anyone.

@4ijo+16TcOLVl and your rough count is ?

When I last looked, the Sears.com and SearsHometownStores.com lists did not entirely agree, but both showed slightly more than 300 stores.

Salinas Sears closing approximately 9/27 (Facebook post on 9/11 says 'final two weeks' but seems like these generally fully wrap up on Sundays).

Hayward likely on or around the same date as they have been cross-promoting discount F&F coupons

I did some googling and came up with a rough count.

Anybody know how many hometown stores are left?

It's very simple. He deducted the "available for lease" stores from his count (which he shouldn't have because those stores are NOT currently closing). That's the reason for your counts discrepancy.

Sears list-maker here. I've emailed the Forbes writer to ask him to compare his list of 53 full-line Sears stores with our list of 59. If I hear back from him, I'll post here.

Sears has removed almost all of the liquidating or liquidated stores from its Store Locator. They still have Hayward, CA, and Salinas, CA, listed; perhaps those two stores have not finished closing yet.

Kmart has not removed any of the recently liquidating stores from its Store Locator.

Thanks, Ron. The only reason I choose not to include Brooklyn in my Kmart count is because I personally consider it as a store within a Sears store as opposed to a separate independent entity. As you’ve stated many times it’s contingent upon how one chooses to view it.

The only lists that I trust are the ones I make for grocery shopping.

If the "last round of closures" is coming to an end, how could there be another round of closures after it?

Unless you meant "the latest round of closures"?

The Forbes article at https://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenshoulberg/2020/09/10/the-searskmart-great-disappearing-act-will-reduce-store-count-to-just-60/ says there are 53 full-line Sears stores left, but I still count 59 (plus 8 small-format Sears stores). Have we missed 6 closings recently?

@2jtf+16TcOLVl: You are 100 % spot on. Many of these buildings have been listed for lease for some time. Apparently businesses aren’t lining up to occupy them.

I mean, what does this article inform us that we aren't already aware of? Also, the author doesn't seem to understand that just because a store is available for lease, does not necessarily mean it's closing. If they are not able to lease it out, then they do not intend to close them for now. So I'm not sure why the author would not include such stores in the total count of open stores. They are still open after all and they are not currently closing.

It's a nothing-burger kind of article that doesn't Tell us what we don't already Know. And the stores available forlease aren't necissarily closing, so for our purposes, the store counts have not changed.

I was just reading this article. I am assuming that the last round of closures is coming to an end and the next round will be announced soon. I know my store is looking very empty, and it's one of the stores listed as up for lease.
