Hierarchy cr-p

VP collects status from Sr director.
Sr. Director from Director.
Director from Principal/mgr
PRINCIPAL/MGR from Sr. Staff
Sr. Staff/mgr assigns to Staff, Sr. Eng, eng.

Sr eng and eng don't do much so all burden comes to staff so status collectors bread and butter comes from staff.

Interesting. QC is degenerating. I was a Sr. Staff Manager at QC in the US and did all my own tech work along with directing others. That was true with my Dir. boss (brilliant) and maybe the level above him.

I found and hired my own replacement in China. Then laid off.

You might be laid off and it will be sad, but maybe okay for you if you really have engineering skills.

I started working in consulting engineering and it was a surprise after big corp. Complex design project assigned; where's the team to help with this?; no, it's your job; figure it out and then tell us and the client how you're going to do it.

It might be okay for you.

@2gnf+1oALyUuo status collectors create a toxic environment by controlling information flow and playing politics. There is absolutely no reason why status collector job should be that hard, but for the toxic culture they create.

At least US still has the concept of Sr staff individual contributors who don't want to collect status. But it's an easier job to be IC really. Too much cr-p to deal with as 'Status collector'. Been there done that. Now back to IC. Less scope for more promotions but easier life.

Depends on country. In US, staff enggs do the most . Sr enggs work hard as well, but produce less impactful output. But in India, everyone wants to be status collector. So status collection in India starts at staff level itself.

I dont like those status collectors either. But once my manager was on vacation and I had to take over. It was NOT an easy job. I was very glad when my manager was back. Collecting status is not easy. You have to filter through a lot of bs, direct people to get better results for clear summary, redirect resources etc etc.

There is a reason staff engineers get screwed. It takes a long time to get from staff and senior staff. At that point, most senior staff engineers realize that if they want to become directors, they need to follow the example of their existing directors a k.a. become a status collector and a power point and excel jockey. They slowly get out of touch with technical work.... I am not saying they need to do the tech work. They don't bother to keep up to date with tech and the outside tech world. This leads to a vicious cycle of wanting to hang in to Qualcomm teats while hindering the growth of junior engineers. This leads to Qualcomm stuck with leadership with stake ideas.

Flattening the hierarchy is the only solution at this point.

OP is right. Q staff engineers are like the non-commissioned officers in the army. They need to deal with the pampered officers on one hand and id--t grunts on the other.

You can complain or go get the f-ing skills to move up the ladder.
I was in your shoes 25 years ago. I complained. Then the VP told me why don't I go get the MBA like he did then we can talk. By the time I had the MBA, I was 3 levels up. Senior Director is still not VP but I am on my way.
