Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Job hunting so should I cross Schwab off the list?

Job hunting rn & a friend who just got hired @Schwab said the manager of his hiring manager told him they’re planning to enforce four days a week in-office for everyone starting Jan 1, 2026—no exceptions.

I started my career right before COVID & realized I actually thrive working remotely. My current job asks for two in-office days (my choice) which is no prob but four? Hard pass.

For those in tech at Schwab is this actually happening across the board? Is it even worth worth considering Schwab b/c this giving control freak/boomer energy

This. One story told to me from a couple years ago was of a team where the manager did an ice breaker every staff. Asked Indian workers what the best steak BBQ was. Another was first concert. Really. So clueless. Not every culture goes to concerts and some did not years ago. If they did the performers are usually unknown to Americans. Great way to divide.

@2g4+1jp93pj78 You have it right. If the company insists on calling itself a family or similar then it's a cult and you should avoid it. It's a way to cover up bad employee treatment because it's what a family would do. What you actually do is exchange your time and effort for money and that's it'll ever be. Leave the Kool-Aid at the bar.

If you treat it as just a paycheck and not some family or amazing company, you'll be fine. I did that for over a decade before I couldn't take the extra-curricular bulls**t any longer.

This doesn't work. Always a million icebreakers during meetings where you are rushed into sharing personal details about yourself. Distracting team bonding Teams chats where you're hearing constant distracting Teams ping notifications all day because some coworker feels compelled to show the manager that they are engaged by sharing some personal "relatable" story, or any other inane nonsense. If you don't participate in certain activities, they literally single you out in private asking you why. Meanwhile, they resist feedback that's actually relevant to the job.

Make sure you speak up if you are being overworked and undercompensated.

Speaking up is what got me fired though. Manager just dug her heels stronger into her way of doing things, got defensive and retaliated.

There is no best place to work except for yourself. Work hard but don’t give them more than 8 hours per day. Outside of that live on your own terms. The past layoffs have shown they only see you as a human resource and nothing else. Don’t put your health and family second to Schwab. Use your sick days, take your vacation, go to your kids’ events. Make sure you speak up if you are being overworked and undercompensated.

Pretty funny there is likely some clown at Schwab reading this trying to figure out who the posters are. Avoid this company - "best place to work" is a fallacy. 👋👋

New employees come in 4 days a week for a period of time…. Then it goes to 3.

Funny. If you can't state 5 things you did in the previous week, maybe there is a problem.

The sh---y RTO policy is not the main reason to not work at Schwab. There are many other reasons not to work there. Low pay, little opportunities for advancement, extreme micromanagement, unethical and unaccountable leadership to name a few….I’m sure you can find an endless number to not join the dumpster fire. So glad I left that shithole. Run! Don’t walk!

Be happy you are not having to send 5 bullet points to Musk and you will soon be sending it to Timmy.

STS is petty lame most managers directors and MDs don't know sh-t a bunch of Senior Engineers do 95% of the work in most teams in STS. RTO - Management and EC member are old and greedy living beyond their life expectancy want to control every aspect of your life. Nothing to learn and grow here. If you want to learn something real and build something tangible go to a startup or a company that is very technical. All you will do in STS is build some API, UI, Dashboard and use tools managed by fools barely held together by ducttape and dental floss.

It depends on your location I think. In some locations, new employees are supposed to go in the office 4 days a week for the first 6 months of employment. After that it's 3 days.

No changes in 2025 per Rick. Reading between the lines means 4 or 5 day RTO in 2026. They want butts in seats. Exceptions are getting harder to obtain.

I hate to say this, but the pendulum is swinging hard in the other direction back toward in-office work. Remote options are drying up and what's left isn't all that compelling. If you want to pass on Schwab, do so. RTO is the least of the reasons you'd want to skip working here just go read some the other threads about working in STS.
