IC here after they took away my team but they want me to manage them still. Insane request and beyond demoralizing and clueless of these incompetent politicians who continue to operate

This is wild and politics at it's finest, people poaching employees just to meet the minimum requirement and technically demoting their supporting managers below them to IC status but still expect them to manage and keep business as usual.
Not only that, but those managers already had people below them that they also expected to manage in one way or another but only being an IC in title.
Post ID: @1zlq+1rSIAXRE and the OP should also articulate and wordsmith your work managing and supervising your now unofficial shadow Direct Reports, their work, the projects, the what, how and why of the work and projects on Your Resume/CV. There ARE ways, methods and maneuvers around Citi's sneaky and snake maneuvers.
Post ID: @qfj+1rSIAXRE Yes, exactly. Why would You Need to train your new manager to do their job that YOU should have gotten promoted to instead of the new manager Citi hired ?? Citi and the previous manager obviously believed and incorrectly perceived that you were Not qualified to be promoted to the previous manager's job, so then why should you help and/or train their new hire when you got passed over for promotion ?? In fact, I would give their new hire wrong or confusing information while I look for a new job.
Post ID: @1zlq+1rSIAXRE If I were You and the OP, I would find a way to Wordsmith and articulate in my Career Development Plans, Reviews and other venues how I'm actually managing the work and projects of X-number of my previous employees/subordinates, how I helped their projects succeed, what I did, etc.. i will Not mention how or why they no longer report to me officially or unofficially. Just write about ABC, XYZ Projects, assignments etc. you helped work on, who you helped and how, etc.. Citi is betting on the fact that employees can not find a loop hole or work around to Citi's snake, sneaky maneuvers and BullSh!t. Employees can play that Fvcken game too. I'm very articulate with the (King's) English language. Just as there are quant skills people should have, there are writing skills that are equally as important in life. Reading books and reputable periodicals help with improving writing skills. Employees should think of their relationship and situation with Sh!tibank as a sort of Chess Game. You need to out-maneuver the Citititanic by using your survival skills.
Post ID: @2dic+1rSIAXRE what a lousy thing to do trying on purpose to give bad information so the person will either quit or let go. You only do that if you have a back up job or don’t need to work anymore. So when I was pushed to my limits, that is what I did because I had enough money to retire. Luckily, they laid me off, and I got a year severance so they give me a big damn favor.
Threaten to quit. Or ask your manager to make an exception for you to be the manager instead. It works. Try it
Your manager will tell you next bonus day that your bonus has to be reduced because you were not in a manager position any more.
Yep, happened to me. My D took my employees to meet the 6 required. So my employees no longer officially report to me but I have to manage them like nothing ever happened. It's all to flatten the org. It's smoke and mirrors and perception. Nothing has really changed, it just looks like it changed. Yes-it's demoralizing, yes - it's id--tic, and yes - it hurts your career. You have to somehow explain to your next hiring manager why you say you are managing a team but it's not reflected anywhere and why they were taken from you. This is truly the most f-ed up company I have ever worked for. Trying to get out but despite reports of employment rates, the market suks for any of us trying to look. Not to mention your reputation is tarnished simply by being associated with $hitty bank. A lot of banks won't even look at your resume if you have Citi on it. We're all rats jumping off a sinking ship.
Same here. Flattened to an IC. New manager wants me to matrix manage all the team (8) and manage all day to day activities. Asked me to not write any goals that would reflect this!!
This seems to be universal. There will be th HR hierarchy and then a real shadow hierarchy.
The thing is, this doesn't work. It looks like I'll be "managing" a difficult employee with no ability to actually manage them. I was hoping this reorg would fix issues like this, but the effect seems to be the opposite. We're muddying the waters on management hierarchy but in the day to day work environment the only thing that has changed is we've undermined the leaders responsible for getting things done.
Op here…they didn’t lower my pay but they want me to help the new manager who is overwhelmed for no extra pay
OP,they did not lower your pay, did they? So it's business as usual for you, except that you won't have to write reviews and approve their vacations.
Right now they want you to be grateful for your job. Don't go past your regular 8 hours, and let the show play out. These changes are going to cause lots of confusion and misery. Hang tight as more are coming, or just jump to another crazy corporate company. Good luck to those staying. Keep your head down and let the dust settle.
Post ID: @qfj+1rSIAXRE As others have posted, your Co-workers are Not your friends. Co-workers will throw each other under the bus and to the wolves to protect their jobs or jobs they may want in the future. All of the Bullsh!t time wasting fake camaraderie, get-to-know-you better activities and events are so very transparent. And since Citi grades/rates based on a curve why help your Competition, your Co-Workers??? Doing so will negatively affect your salary increases, bonuses and promotion prospects. These employee behaviours in turn negatively affect Citi and its Shareholders in a vicious cycle that Citi started. Once a paycheck is involved, You are No longer my friend. You're at best my business partner or Co-worker No matter how nice you are to my face.
To the OP, Citi wants you to informally manage your old team without paying you the appropriate salary level and bonus. This is a sneaky, roundabout way of getting you to do more work and paying you below your appropriate salary level. To Post ID: @eav+1rSIAXRE Yes. Agree. I have also seen Karma come back several times. A former manager did Not promote to take over her role as she was getting ready to transfer out to another Citi department. There were only 2 of us doing the job function. Instead she and another manager converted a Temp/Contractor to FTE to become my manager. After this affront, I transferred out to another Citi group. Two years into her role in her new Citi dept. she too was passed up for promotion in the same way she Fvcked Me Over by her boss. Instead of promoting her to his role as he was transferring out, he hired an outsider from JPMorgan Chase who has less work experience and knowledge than her in the subject matter and is about 15 years younger than her. This is only one example or instance when I've witnessed Karma coming back to bite people in their A$$ES. Just as I was told to "train" my new "manager" to basically do my AND his own job (I didn't. I held back knowledge and information for job security purposes. Why should I or anyone help their competition who Fvcked them over??), my old manager was and is tasked to train her new manager. Now she has to live and deal with the ignominy of having to defer to a much less qualified hire, just like I did. My stance, is that if the MotherFvcker who was hired or promoted to do my AND his/her own job is better than and smarter than me that I ended up not getting promoted to their job, then they can figure it all out !!!
@nae+1rSIAXRE use the king’s english please. Your blathering makes no sense
Unfortunately you are not quailed as a manager in their view, the new manager is better. You still manage your team? No, it is just nice way to balance. You are not hand on either. So luck you still have a job. But over the time, your bonus will match IC level and nobody will remember you were a manager. Reality is you are in back office and a cost.
At the end of the day, if these incompetent politicians cannot meet numbers, they will be let go. Karma comes back. For sure. Have seen this million times in my career.
