Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

They really don't want anyone getting too comfortable and it shows

I started at Nike back in 2015 and have seen it just get worse and worse here. 2015 was the last year where it actually felt like Nike was taking care of its employees - everything that I'd heard about working for Nike seemed to happen. Since then it's just been continual reorgs and layoffs, aimless leadership, backstabbing, loss of benefits, you name it. They really don't want anyone getting too comfortable and it shows. What su**s is that there are fewer and fewer people left who remember how it used to be, so for people getting hired in the past several years this is all they know. I can't imagine what it's like to finally land that Nike job and you realize what a c-ap place it is to work at.

Idk - I never get comfortable with any company. I don't understand why people assume once you get hired you don't have to perform or be responsible for yourself or your development. Why the hell would I want my manager be responsible for my own development? I know myself better than my manager knows me, sure, I probably don't see all the issues I may have but my manager is in like 10% of my meetings. Why would I want to take their "snap shot" feedback on how I could improve.

Anyway - I worked for a previous employer who would cut all new employees within the first 2 years of a down turn in the market. Unfortunately, 2008, 09, 11, 13, 15... were their down years. Somehow I survived 3 of them but didn't make it past 2013. They kept all the senior people and canned all the young folks. That company now lacks innovative ideas and the avg age of their company is 50+. Not a good look. Regardless, I know this will get down voted, but get outside experience. The grass isn't greener on the otherside, and it usually never is. The US just s—s at employment and companies like to meat grinder their employees so they can look great on the stock market.

I'm also not advocating to stick with Nike if you're not happy but don't assume your next employer will be some magnificent place to work. Work is work, you either enjoy what you do, you absolutely hate it. There is no inbetween.

You nailed it.
I was fortunate enough to be around for the early 2000’s and in some ways it is a more diverse place which is great but in every other way, it’s focused on profit to the point that people are no longer seen as the soul of the company. They are just pawns in a wheel of incremental growth.
