Before I quit, they always acted like the employee's that do the job, can make it better. So when different and more efficient methods where suggested, the managers, always had a "my way or the highway" attitude. If the managers had any sense of intelligence, they would listen to their people. However, they all want a feather in the hat, or their name stamped on something "safe." Let people do their job, and get outta the way. Most of these managers couldn't even pass the latest battery test!

@1zlv You sound like you have doubts. #1 worst company to work for in North America, remember? Think about how the UP got that title, and somehow managed to go undefeated in keeping that title. All of the class 1's are in deep doo doo right now because of bad decisions made by poor management. Good management=good decisions. Bad management=bad decisions! Got that?
@1zlv quick question, do you also admire thieves who steal other peoples property? Asking for a friend
Funny, for such a badly managed company they continue to make record profits year after year. As long as the money keeps pouring in, nothing will change with the leadership or how the company is ran. If the company was losing money, all the complaints from employees would have merit. As it is now, this just seems like sour grapes.
Being management at a Class 1 is just a matter of being able to take a beating like a poor dog and too stupid to speak your mind. Fear and hate are the main dish served
I used to have a horrible manager. I mean horrible. On one occasion I found a defect, called and told him we needed 2-3 people to pin point it, then we’d figure out a repair / replace plan. He went off on me, cussing, insults, threats, told me to “do my job”. He asked me if I wanted him to tell the director that I couldnt “do my job”. I myself called the director, told him what defect I found and that I needed a couple more guys to assist. Manager shows up, takes over, and I didnt say a single word, none of us did. After 9 days NINE DAYS!!! of the manager being in charge we asked him if we could try something. We fixed it in under 3 hours when he was out of the way.
All YP managers are useless scumbags cut their pay and work them longer hours
That's been the main problem at the UP for a very long time. The management doesn't listen to its employees. Why make them do the battery test, when it's obvious they would fail it. It's a great idea that will never happen. That management will continue to do what they've always done. Bark orders to achieve what they want done, and scratch their heads when things continue to fail. Then they would lie and blame the very employees they should've been listening to to save their own a-s. Let's be real about all of this. Everything bad at the UP is all hovering around the bad management and their stellar decisions. So again why make them do the battery test? Let's make the management do the work they keep yelling about and let's see who can do it. If they can't do the work, then it should be goodbye to them. When the management positions open up, offer those positions to the very people who have actual experience with it, and watch how the operations change. The battery test is a great idea, but the actual work is better and real world. It's not a classroom simulation.
Sounds like Houston? I'm glad that you moved on, hopefully, for the better.
This is not news. Everybody knows that UP managers are d-mb. That's why Buffet bought into BNSF. He said the management structure was garbage, and they keep chugging along, with false numbers.
I have worked for UP for 9 months, and will guarantee, that none of the managers at my location would pass it. Maybe the company should test them.
