Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Sites outside of Dell are now being blocked.

You might be on your 15 minute break but that does not make it okay to Google a recipe for dinner or check something personal on your work system. If you do, get ready to see the blocked messaging informing you that it's not work related and if it is you need to fill out a case with ServiceNow so Dell can vet the site for work use.

For all the old school folks who have been with Dell forever (many managers and above included) this will come as a bit of surprise since many have totally meshed work and personal together over the years.

Just a bit of advice (take it or leave it) get your personal stuff off of your work system and don't look up or check anythink that is not Dell related.

I’ve been at the Dell office surfing a few sites while eating lunch. This shouldn’t be a big thing. I haven’t been denied access. Have I been monitored? Probably. Common sense should prevail.

Using your corporate computer for anything personal isn't smart. Between keystroke recording software, general monitoring and the risk of putting malware on the network, it's not worth it.

What's interesting is Gmail is not blocked for me and never has been yet people here are claiming it is. Same thing for Spotify.. the app has been on my system for years. If that's the case then it's only certain groups blocked from certain things. Even my director has his Gmail on his system - we legit saw the popup notifications when he shared screen. I have never once seen any site blocked and I've looked at whatever I wanted to (nothing shady of course).. it would be interesting to know how this works from an IT perspective.

Yes we have 1 hour for lunch and 2 15 minute breaks and must post it onto our teams Teams chat before we go and when we return (i5-i9 grade levels all comply).

Most outside websites onsite including gmail, Spotify, etc have been blocked since many years ago!

FYI: I’m sure you don’t do it, but NEVER EVER do connect your personal phone to the office WiFi network! Don’t do it!

Obviously we are all worried about getting cut at a moments notice, but for those of you considering on taking the advice here re transferring data across to an external drive - DON'T!
I have some team photos at events, along with the occasional snap of my dogs, cool backgrounds, kids and my headshots that I have used for badges and 365 etc and moved them across to an ext HDD - immediately got a security flag, dismissed it as none of the data is Dell restricted, or work related and then had a call drop in my diary with the Ethics team so that they could validate what I had been doing. They had me share my screen, reconnect my HDD to check its contents and made me take a security test online and reminded me about doing this sort of thing is against company policy and that it could result in termination.
I passed all of the tests as I was not steaking company data and was let off with a warning.
But be careful - the eyes are upon us all.
If you do need to move your own personal files - you can do it by sharing a folder in OneDrive - you can look up how to do it in MyIT.

If only they invented a personal device you could put in your pocket that used data from a cellular network

They blocked Gmail access years ago on me, but they let everyone else still use Facebook and Netflix.... white at work at their desks, with feet up.

They monitor guest too.

The Wild West is still around, just more so in the business. IT has annoying compliance dashboard tied to leader bonuses. They comply. Everyone is else does shadow IT with terrible security especially ISG.

I work in sales and have some customer websites that are blocked.
It can be a bit frustrating when doing research on the company before a meeting but not a major issue.Usually gambling companies or similar we sell to
What I will say if you are using a work computer for more than buying a pair of shoes or booking a flight something is wrong and this is coming from someone who hates working here.

@bup+1uNmkwrg guy behind me in RR2 over 20yrs ago was in hookup chat rooms and had his own nudes (that I unfortunately had to see) on his work computer.

The early 2000s IT at Dell was like the wild west. Everything was open. Rogue APs everywhere. Movie/file servers stuffed under people's desks. AIM was the closest thing to a corporate messaging standard. It was a great time until the RIF culture took over

Dell monitored site internet traffic as far back as the post Y2K. layoffs. They went to IT and looked for anyone on inappropriate sites and the walked out many as easy layoffs.

Don’t mesh personal and work stuff. I don’t know why people do this. Unless you own the company, they aren’t your assets and they are monitored. Just use common sense.

Many years ago, when Dell was laying off people, they went to IT and IT scoured the network data for people who were gambling or going to adult sites - voila, many hundreds of people fired for cause in a day. Now Dell has had internet sites restricted for many years, so that is not likely to happen, but the idea that they would be doing this is not surprising at all.

If you are getting the boot they make it now so you can't use a zip drive to get anything.
