Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

OXY is not doing anything to be attractive to a new generation of talented people?

OXY had a great opportunity to seize the moment and make work from home a full time option for its staff and use it as a powerful tool for recruitment and talent retention (which we know is struggling right now). It would obviously differentiate OXY in the hiring space. Unfortunately, it's been communicated very poorly: multiple confusing emails stating a hard line approach and then a reformatted message saying exemptions are possible through summer, poorly addressed at the town hall leaving no time for Q&A, and now VH is saying WFH wasn't as good as the staff thought it was. I think this surprised many people, as they've been telling us how productive we've been for the past year + especially considering many folks are doing 2 or 3 people's jobs. Much talent has already been depleted by the previous VSPs and layoffs. There's clearly not enough staff to do the work and there's huge initiatives at play to ensure the two companies operate efficiently as one. Wouldn't be surprised if additional younger, capable staff leave for remote options or more flexible work, as this seems to be playing out right now already.

[Highlight from thread +1b1fXVU0. Well said! If I were younger, I would never look for an opportunity here.]

Oxy still paying a salary, right? If that’s not attractive enough then go somewhere else.

It doesn’t matter what people want it is what is best for the company. That was a big mistake to ask the workers what they want. Of course they are going to elect work from home. Oxy is not the only company making this mistake.

The last poster can also go in the office full time if he or she wants to. Clearly the majority of people want to work at home at least part time.

That last post was nicely worded.

WFH was a necessity and band-aid to get the world through the pandemic. It does not provide the ability to maximize the talent and sharing of ideas. Nothing can replace working together in meetings and informal engagements with colleagues throughout the day. There are some repetitive transactional positions that may be fine working from home but the majority of business is dynamic and different everyday and a remote environment does not enable optimum communication exchange of ideas or innovation.

I’m early 30’s. Can’t wait to GTFO of this mess. Planning to quit later this year, already got a new job lined up. So sick of VH’s absolute dumpster fire leadership. To add the cherry on top, now she gone full-re--rd and is pandering this whole intersectionality nonsense on the entire company.

Anyone worth anything left Oxy years ago. Anyone worth anything now would never go there. A shred of self respect puts you in either category.

Hopefully the rumors of the merge are true and it happens. They will get rid of all the old dinosaurs that turned OXY into the next blockbuster videos!

I understand wanting to WFH, but since you work for Oxy you have to do as you are told. If not just leave, but the whining is not attractive and makes you come off like a spoiled little kid. We are going back to work because the pandemic is not as bad and we have ways to deal with it better, I would work from the office any day as long as the pandemic was gone. You guys are selfish for not looking at the bigger picture and society as a whole. Just find a job that lets you work from home and stop whining about Oxy. Go somewhere is already.

Work from home became the norm. Some people get used to a certain pattern to their life and have trouble adjusting to change. That is why mental health counseling services are important here.

What will be so emotionally challenging about returning to work? This is what we signed up for. We all knew we’d have a commute and work in an office when we accepted employment.

Good luck to all next week. It will be challenging and let’s hope everyone can deal with any emotional problems in a calm adult manner.

I am neither talented nor young, otherwise I will not be staying with Oxy.

Awww, Cupcake, what do you want the company to do to help you feel better and be more attracted to staying?

Have any of you people ever been terminated not due to performance but just cost cutting. I suggest you go through that experience at least once. It will change you into whining about this wfh issue like a spoiled child into appreciating employment like an adult.

And now many people are being allowed ridiculous exemptions such as ‘I’m afraid to ride in the elevator with other people’..this should NOT qualify someone to WFH until September! Heard HR management is pretty much requiring everyone to come back, yet other depts are letting people stay home until Sept for any reason given. All this is going to do is cause strife amongst employees and bring down morale even lower than it already is. Believe me, if I was allowed to WFH full time, I would! I handled tons of work over the past 15 months and have been a mentor to others with no issues.

I agree wfh full time should be allowed! Micromanagers like the guy commenting below need to get a life as the future generation at OXY is tired of them.

Your view of the office is exactly why we don’t want you in the company anymore. It is more than just management watching over you.
Serious question. Why can’t you just go back to the way things were before covid? This wfh was always meant to be a temporary way of continuing business. We’re you misled otherwise?

I am a 34 year old employee and I am dreading going back to the office, even 3 days a week. If you count the 1.5-2 hours of traffic each day coming and going to OXY, that’s 36 hours in 3 days spent in the office or commuting. I may just have to look in industries that value remote work more and leave, since oil and gas is way too conservative and hates the idea of remote work. Tech industries allow it and promote it, where employees can pick where they live and not reside in cr---y places like Houston. The working in the office is all about control from management over the employees. This is exactly why the open door policy exists. Politics and control. I’ve worked at OXY for 11 years, this is how it is. That said, employees proved they should be allowed to work from home over the past 15 months. Maybe come to the office 1 day a week IF needed.

Would you say the same thing about the people who took the VSP over the last 4 or 5 years? Maybe you are just new to the company and didn’t see the talent that left.

OXY third rate leadership and management will absolutely cause a brain drain and it’s not even about work location. This company is hot garbage all around, I don’t even consider myself a superstar but boy do I not respect anything I’ve encountered so far. Anyone under 40 who respects themselves should be looking for exit opportunities now that we are returning to the office.

We don’t want new people who only want to work from home. They are lazy people, especially if they are early career. They think they know more than what the know and really need the face to face mentoring. Older employees who want to work from home are really needed in the office to mentor and provide coherence to the workforce. If you want to work from home I suggest you go to REI or Academy , buy some boots, and take a hike and don’t come back to the company.
