Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

Tied down to contract

I don't know how many others are in the same boat, but I am still legally tied to 2U because they paid for my graduate degree. I have almost a year left until I can leave. Anyone have any insight on what would happen if I chose to leave before the contracted period ends? Is it even worth looking for something better? Even if I only had to pay 50%, that is almost my yearly salary.

I can only speak for years ago, but they did not try to recoup any tuition as it cost too much. If they try to, ask for the amount the 2U had to pay, they only pay the university's share.

Honestly, try to stick it out if you can. Obviously, don't risk your health, but if you can swing it, future you will be SO grateful that you don't have payments to make on your degree (unless you're laid off, they will get their money from you, I promise). I would recommend that you calculate what your payments would roughly be, and every month you can stick it out at 2U, put that money into a savings account. Once you can quit free and clear, buy yourself something fabulous or take a fun trip. Again, if you aren't seeing a therapist for mental health and burnout, use your benefits now to do that. Take full advantage of PTO, appt leave, and don't do ANYTHING extra outside of the basics of your role. You can do it!

I couldn't even imagine they'd actually go through with the pursuit of employee repayment for the "2u version" of these programs, for the mere levels of horrendous national publicity such a pursuit could result in.

Are there not enough stories/pending lawsuits from students who believe they've been deceived into investing fund/loans into their 2u - laced programs? Just for 2u to then turn around and place such a burden on the already highly stressed and strung out employees that are hanging on by a shoestring?!

The notion is as comical as it is sad!

Can they really come after you for the money if you leave? Like are they going to take you to court if you don't pay?

Post ID: @1yjt+1rcU8VtI, how valuable are these degrees that 2u paid for?
After all, 2u gave away the 2u infected (ah...affected) versions of the programs.
Oh, the irony-- lol!

Good luck (not really) with 2U trying to clawback any money.

You are VERY lucky that 2U pains for your degree! Would have rather have student loans up the kazoo like a lot of students drowning in student loan debt? Su-k it up and be thankful and continue to work hard for this company 2U that gave you this gift!

@VP, the truth is, many employees did not know that they were working with fraudsters. Not sure it was a legal contract.

I was on a similar path at 2U after getting my degree. I realized it wasn't worth hanging around this sinking ship for several more years. I decided to quiet quit, doing just enough to get by. Since I wasn't focused on 2U, I picked up a second full-time remote job during work hours. Within a few months, 2U laid me off but with a generous severance package and no tuition repayment.

I’d stick it out. Either you finish the contract and are free and clear or 2u goes under and you’re free and clear. Even if you get laid off, that’s probably better than having to pay back the tuition.

I’d also delete this as it’s relatively specific identifying information.

You’re stuck here. It’s rough I know , but those were the terms agreed to. I know two people who have left in the 50% period and HR came for the money unfortunately.

I’ve got 6 months left on mine so I feel the pain
