What Happens When Your Career Becomes Your Whole Identity - HBR

https://hbr.org/2019/12/what-happens-when-your-career-becomes-your-whole-identity

While identifying closely with your career isn’t necessarily bad, it makes you vulnerable to a painful identity crisis if you burn out, get laid off, or retire. Individuals in these situations frequently suffer anxiety, depression, and despair. By claiming back some time for yourself and diversifying your activities and relationships, you can build a more balanced and robust identity in line with your values.

@@1xyd+1uvFhakU The spiritualism you referred to has largely been relegated to fossils in big cities. Ancient India died many decades ago behind the glassy facade of shiny corporate offices in the big offices. You'd be disappointed to find continuation of the same toxic capitalism in Indian offices, may be even more!

@1xyd lol. Your standing among friends, relatives, neighbours is the job title you have (bonus if you are a 'manager'). Your worth as a prospective groom is quantified by the dollar(rupee) per-annum salary.

@mlc. India is materialistic? I'll take your word for it, but as an outsider this surprises me. India is the land of Hinduism, Buddhism, Gandhi, etc.

This is true literally for every Asian (Indians and Chinese) who are scuttled on H1Bs to USA. Their boss who called them also happens to be Asian mostly and once the guinea pig arrives, he/she is on a 24x7 boss duty. Every Asian I have known considers office as the only place where they can socialize. They worship their boss (succ their c0,cks), I have seen them prepare coffee/tea for their Boss in US offices and have zero personality in their personal lives.

Very true.
Such a sad life we have where we identify with title positions and money .

Absolutely 100% true. Layoffs WILL happen, retirement (sometimes unplanned) WILL happen. It's vital to be connected to things outside of work. It's so easy to forget that.

Not easy if from subcontinent. From a materialistic culture where job title and car you drive are what defines you, easier said than done.
