Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Collect and Clear

So I participated in this (go in, empty out your desk, take home personal belongings). Similar feeling back in 2008, but worse. I know they have to redistribute seating for Covid, but I feel a bunch will never come back (either WFH, or separated from the company). No drama with seperation, an email, a phone call and you are done. Am I looking too far into this, or did I hit the nail on the head? Also heard they want to eliminate buildings.

Our building started C&C today. So strange and a little sad. Probably will be doing WFH indefinitely...I think maybe next summer return to in office just a few days a week with free addressing :(

Just completed my C&C this morning. While I can easily do my job from home 100% of the time, and have not missed the drive into work these last 4 months, I couldn't help but be a little sad clearing out my desk. Ask me again when there's 8 inches of snow out there and "sad" will probably be a distant memory ;-)

@1hug+1698nwfK it was by building. Everyone had to go in (salary and contract) and clear out their desk. This seems to have been going on mostly in powertrain, not sure of the other groups in Ford. I am wondering what influence the VW deal is playing on this. Both companies have been hit hard by Covid; wonder if this will increase the number of JVs and move it all to a "merger of equals" lol. So much for those Bryan Cranston voice over commercials about Amurica .

Couple of things have come to light during Covid. You don't need a new brand new campus and second you can source the PD work from around the globe.

If those guys on Michigan Avenue aren't considring these new realities the company really is doomed.

Its anybody's guess as to what happens in the bizzaro world of Ford Motor Company. I don't know that it's a forgone conclusion with layoffs. There is a lot at stake for Ford with this as well- a number of things to consider.

Ford would get much more mileage out of furloughs as opposed to eliminating jobs. They'll realize instant savings versus a massive financial downstroke associated with job cuts. In addition they wouldn't have to worry about cutting the wrong people and the messiness associated with job cuts in general, regardless of clean and clear, etc. We're just a coming off an SRD that didn't go well and are in the midst of the pandemic. And then they add deep job cuts to all of this when they need product launches and production to go well? Second, how would Ford go to the Trump administration asking for a bailout on the heels of massive job cuts? It seems to me they could negotiate a much better deal by not playing this card- at least not yet. Third, if they were to do this, I think the ripple effect would be greatly felt in SE MI as the suppliers would need to react and GM and Fiat would surely follow suit. All in all, I think they can get there with furloughs and other savings (i.e. suspending the match, freezing more of the pension, etc.). I think most all of us are on borrowed time, but I think there is more in play here, at least right now, than just thinking cuts are a fait accompli.

The one thing Ford has done is become very proficient in laying people off. Much more then building affordable vehicles. Stage is set for a very clean, non-dramatic kick in the a– for those selected.

Why are they asking people to clear out their stuff? Did this include full time Ford direct employees too?

It is the final nail in the coffin...they are making it easier for us to pick our belongings and then the layoff process is simple....through email/lock computer......there is no need for building space nor H1b here in dearborn.....it is not good for product development......IT dearborn is just too bloated...as well as PDC outer ring road...who wants a billion dollar campus now if we can barely go there once in a blue moon....ford executives are not dumb to realize that majority of the computer related work can done in in low-cost countries for 70% less.....btw..who wants a bronco now when everybody is trying to get rid of their second car......common sense........BLOATED work force...just like GM & FCA...

I’m expecting to know more on Friday, after Thursday’s ER, it is not going to be pretty.
But I’m sure glad we invested in the train station, so office space attracts talent!

I had a similar feeling. I noticed we have a huddle on Friday and then on Tuesday. I'm guessing Friday will be the announcement about our abysmal losses and then Tuesday about the "corrective actions". Jim Jr is about to get his hands dirty.

There is a packet that contains the retiree benefits book, severance info (if any is offered), extended health care and other benefits (if offered), what to do with your management lease car by what date. Ford has almost perfected the art of laying people off, these materials have changed little.

I am fully expecting to be given the heave after surviving May 2019. I'm not sure when the decision will be final (or if it is, when it will be executed), but what does one do if one is let go via a phone call or email? Will instructions be given on the step-by-step to follow what any "normal" retirement would be done? How can we best find out what to do if we're let go?
