Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Optum leadership doesn't know how to cut fat

All they know how to do is cut muscle. Every new round of layoffs we keep losing our best employees while the worst are still here. This keeps happening again and again. It makes no sense to us or anybody with an IQ above 70, but I guess it makes sense to those who are supposed to be running this company.

Survivors always survive. They become the bureaucrats and manage all the cuts. It's a truly interesting phenomenon.

100% storytelling, agreed. It is Storytelling, of lies upon lies, with no vision period. Hence the zero trust factor in senior leadership. Everyone can see the snakes running the show, and if anything worthwhile or logical is brought up, those senior leadership and “friends” will gang up on said “competent” employee. What makes the Storytelling more compelling, is when the current inept Senior Leadership and friends, state it’s not their job to come up with the “Story” and pass that responsibility to all those underneath them. Tune in next week, for Chapter 2.

It’s story telling. What story do I want to tell that will make me look good. Actions to make that story appear to be realistic and good ensues. It’s more important to keep and promote people that go along with your story telling, rather than solve actual issues. Solving issues may make the story telling skills look bad.

So … more competent employees are let go, because it doesn’t fit the story line.

The culture here has become a friends zone. Not sure how senior leadership were selected for their positions, since most have pushed out the seasoned staff, only to hire and promote their “friends.” A junior high playground is better ran than how things are here now….. And the senior leadership are not held accountable for a severe lack of even the basic knowledge of their job. Not sure how the hiring process for most directors and above are selected these days or the past 5 years, but it seems like they are also protected by some unknown force since they’re able to continually have no knowledge and do not need to report upstream on their progress or lack of. There are very few good Senior Leadership left, but the majority are inept in all aspects. Perhaps it’s time to name some names…..

Imagine being that stellar employee that should have got a 4, but your manager was forced to find some ridiculous thing to nitpick you for that you literally never discussed the whole year, just to give you a 3? Everything else on your review is spectacular. Then you get the crushing blow of no RRP a raise so small it’s unnoticeable.
Then they’ll turn and load you up with tons of work and smooth talk you like that didn’t just happen.

That culture right there, that doesn’t create healthy competition, it creates animosity and burnout and turnover. I understand the $ isn’t unlimited, but, maybe the more 4’s you give out, the more split the pool is. If that irritates everyone more than people getting a 1% raise and no bonus when it’s undeserved, then those people are part of the problem.

Telling me I can't give 2 employees a 4 on their review. We need a curve they said. Maybe I hired and mentored stellar employees. High performers. But you can't have that. You have to downgrade someone for what??? Another reason I hate that company and left. It feels so good to enjoy not dread going to work again.

I’ve been through quite a few layoffs and it’s always the same. Some poor, undeserving soul that works really hard, but probably isn’t the bosses “bestie”.
It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it goes here. If you’re friends with the boss, you’re safe unless the boss themselves gets the axe. Then, you got different butts to kiss to gain favor. It’s never about your work and dedication. Just like your reviews. You can bust your rear every year, do everything you’re asked of and then some and never get a 4 or 5, because if Leadership says only 2 people can get 4’s, then the 2 besties get it and you’re getting a 3 and maybe a bonus if you’re lucky. Stay away from teams where there’s any situations like this if you know it exists, it’s a dead end unless you’re “in”.

With layoffs there are always red flags, as noted above, you just have to be willing to see them.

@1vrj+1rR3tm11 I saw the writing on the wall with common reviews set up the way they were. What’s your source? Any other grades targeted?

Actually, that fat is being trimmed in 3 waves coming up. Lots of 30's are going to have to hit the pavement and look for a new job (across the entire org). If you're a 30 you might want to start making new connections, it's harder to land interviews for a job when laid off...

Mgmt don’t layoff their friends or people they like. Typically management listen to the gossipers who are their friends and they are jealous of the people who work hard and actually get things done so they bad mouth these good workers. They want their jobs and promotions too. Thus, good workers go and bad stay.

If the company is going to give me the bare-minimum resources and support to complete my job, they better believe I will be repaying that favor in kind. I am tired of being made to pick up the extra work left by departed employees who can’t be replaced by anyone other than contractors.

This all coming from a people manager. Do you expect me to put on a fake face for the people reporting to me? I care about them as real people and will be advising them to look out for themselves and do what’s best for them and their families. The company certainly doesn’t care.

Maybe now you understand what Boomers and long timers knew all along. Clock in, clock out. This company doesn't care about you or reward loyalty and hard work. Congrats, you've been "Optum-ized".
