Joined QCOM last year , I am a newbie here , atleast Amon had the courtesy to tell us 2 months in advance , most companies don’t.
Irrespective of what happens to me from here I’d hold Amon and QCOM in high regard

Wow. Amons warning is not due to warn or anything. They anyway give you two months pay post the layoff so you are covered for WARN there itself.

Steve M was an id--t. Because of him we got into trouble with Apple. He was indecisive and has no vision to diversify company. CA saved QC with 5G vision and is diversifying in other revenue streams. He's not perfect ..but is far better than Stupid Steve.
Getting laid off is a fact of life, it happens. It's how a company treats people while they're working there that matters. Mollenkopf was a class act compared to CA. He steered the company through hard times, harder than this, and he held lunches with small groups of engineers to give us his take and foster hope. He made himself available, and I interacted with him a few times. CA doesn't give a sh!t. He ignores people reaching out to him for help. He's a cheerleader when times are good and sh!ts his pants when the waters get rough. Getting laid off may not be avoidable, but making an environment so toxic that people want to quit is not avoidable. Shame on CA and all this sub-par middle managers.
So thank WARN law creators. They did huge favor to all employees. Layoff is never fun. However, having 2 months advance notice/pay is big helper. Decent severance helps to survive through until landing to next job. QCOM is reasonable in that sense.
My last company lay off was 77 personnel
It's the LAW because Q plans to layoff way more the 50 workers which by law requires a WARN notice.
OP, you can see by the replies how bitter or slow Q employees are. 2 months notice is insufficient for attrition (if any) to reach critical mass, but it gives 2 extra months in job search.
I partially disagree with an earlier reply. I think it's only the law when the layoff is large enough to trigger a WARN notice. I previously worked in a small company. One day they laid off almost 1/3 of the company - no notice at all. That said, Qualcomm's layoffs are large enough to trigger WARN, so yes in this case it's the law.
Then why didn’t other companies do it if it’s the LAW ?
There is no 'good way' to get fired. It is a very painful process for the impacted employee. Being asked to leave immediately is jarring and painful. Being told that you may be executed two months down the line is not any better. Personally, I think that keeping everyone in limbo is worse as productivity is ki-led for a few months
They announced it earlier so employees can start finding new job and resign by themselves. In this way, Q does not have to spend money to pay severance. Thisbis not a rocket science that is too difficult to understand
It's the law in CA they don't do you any favors out of the kindness of their hearts. Don't get su-kered. IT'S THE LAW
