This is just a shell game. The statement is meant to allay concerns, but the 1,000 add to staff was already planned due to membership growth and specific contractual obligations. These layoffs are not offset by those hires and saying this is disingenuous.
The purpose of the layoffs is to reduce the higher paying jobs and those close to retirement in order to hire millennials at less then half the salary. But as we all know, you get what you pay for. A lot of amazing talent is sent packing. Any similar company will be wise to scoop them up! Stay tuned.
