How bad is attrition really? Are Leadership worried or happy if it’s part of the plan

I keep hearing that attrition is out of control in Houston / Midland but haven’t seen any reaction from Leadership. Is this part of the plan to keep morale low so people leave on their own? I’ve never seen the level of trust this low in the company

@dar+1aDHoEpu - get out of here. “HR’s of two companies were emailing each other” is completely not true.

Depends on which level of management. Top level executives are probably happy enough at the prospect of reduced costs without paying severance. The lower and mid tiers who actually have to get things done are worried.

Having seen some of the cr-p my manager has pulled off in BR there’s no way in the world I would ever trust her ever. If her mouth is moving she’s involved in some personal advancement and will say or do whatever is needed to preserve her agenda. Morale is horrible and other than her pets, no one comments in her regular micro meetings. Ive never seen such a well disguised chameleon with cobra like venom. She was reprimanded before, given a lame position then wound up right back in management. Can’t wait to tell her I’m gone.

Being happy is an understatement. Thoughtful and well planned.

OP. Morale is aweful. I've never seen anything like it. Everyone is looking for a new job. New hires looking to get out. 10 to 20 years with the company also looking to get out. Two engineering managers in Midland have resigned. Many younger engineers have resigned in Midland. Getting rid of the cost of living adjustment destroyed morale in Midland and Carlsbad. Management either doesn't care or is unable to react quickly. Funny how they can cut benefits so quickly but takes months and months of study before they can restore them.

Oh there worried alright. Now we have to attend departmental meeting covering "How to restore trust". Let's just say I almost lost my eyesight with biggest eye-roll ever.

Isn't illegal for companies to collude like that? I thought they could only legally verify you were employed at the company...

This sounds very illegal. They should be investigated.

In 2008 the circumstance were obviously quite different. Right now, the market is flooded with unemployed engineers and geoscientists. I for one had to start a job with a significant pay cut just to keep going. However, in the long term, I didn't see development opportunities, joy, and above all, health, at ExxonMobil anymore.

When interviewing outside of XOM, there are "no secrets" in the 21st or even the 20th Century. Everyone knows who is interviewing outside and with whom they have interviewed and what job offers you have received.

If you are offered a job by another oil & gas company for a 25% pay increase, take it. The cash flow over 10-20 years far outweighs the salary increases per year in XOM. Also, remember if XOM counteroffers with a 25-30% pay increase and a CL bump, you will probably not see another raise for 5+ years in XOM and you probably also be in a much more competitive CL group.

In 2008 had an offer from another major for exact same role for a 25% pay increase with similar benefits.
Our Division manager asked me into his office. He stated this was unusual, but his VP was giving me an off cycle CL bump and 30% pay increase. Strange to me was the timing. No conversation within XOM about my being sought by other company, so I thought.
I did not immediately get back with other company, but they contacted me and stated they increased their offer to exactly 5% above the XOM increase.
Was accidentally forwarded an email from offering company which said have their HR get in touch with XOM HR to determine what my current pay was. Within this email trail was back and forth conversation between companies. I was very surprised that they do this. When finally accepted other company’s offer and left XOM, in my departure interview I asked why XOM had offered me an off cycle CL and pay raise. It was stated that company was losing too many employees to competitors and was trying to keep them now. I said, Too Late.
5 years later was contacted by XOM to rejoin with all previous service time intact and another significant increase. This because again, too many folks were leaving. I accepted and will be retiring very soon with all previous service time. Perfect timing, as at 5 years with other company was vested and achieved annuity deferred annuity from them to start at 65.
Short story is that if enough of us do drag up, benefits and pay will return to those still on board and for those who are offered a return.

In some parts of EMIT the executives are aware and worried, but they aren’t in a place to be able to do much about it.
