Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

If you decide to quit at UP do not give them any notice. They will walk you out the front door and fire you on the spot.

Instead quit when you’re ready and give them notice effective immediately. Sad it has come to this. You can’t be professional at an unethical company like UP. Give notice and they fire you. Don’t give notice and they’ll be mad they couldn’t fire you.

I would never resign or or quit. Just don’t show up one day, work your other job. Call your “union “ rep and put him to work. At least that way you can return if you decide to. It also makes it harder for them to maintain minimum employee count because you might come back, therefore pushing the few still working even harder.

I talked to a manager I trusted and he told me not to give them two weeks notice because they might pull me out of service. I turned in my paperwork the day before I planned to quit. The next day I went to work and said goodbyes to all the great people I worked with. The day after, CMS put me on duty for my regular job! Id--ts. Apparently they figured it because they called someone else. Nobody from the company ever talked to me as to why I was leaving or anything. But that's okay, I still have my radio and switch keys haha.

@1vam Not disagreeing with you, but have you worked anywhere other than UP in the past five years? What @1brv said is the norm everywhere except maybe for the tech sector.

Everyone should remember that they’re employed on an “at will” basis, and that UP (or any other company) probably won’t give you any notice when they take your livelihood away to fluff share prices and executive compensation packages. Don’t do for them what they wouldn’t do for you.

I wonder why so many people are quitting? I’m told at work by management that this is the best job in the world and those of us who work here are lucky. Am I being lied to?

It may be becoming more common, but it is not standard practice.

Companies will usually pull you off projects or give you less access to things. They may say they don't require you to work the full two weeks and just pay you for it instead. That's different from escorting you out the front door and firing you like UP does.

Fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter what other companies do or do not do. UP fires you for giving notice. So don't give notice at UP. Just quit. The end.

This is true for most companies. The “two weeks courtesy notice” is rarely honored once given. Standard procedure is to immediately pull your badge and shut you out of company systems. There’s also no guarantee that they’ll pay you for the duration of the notice period.

Do a no-notice quit once you have your start date at your next job. You don’t even have to give a reason; you can say “I’m done, bye” and drop their stuff off at the nearest office or yard.

I got another job while I was on "Vacation" to see if I liked it. 3 weeks later I called my union rep to have them email me the resignation forms. I resigned via Adobe Acrobat from the comfort of my own home. They deserve zero respect in that regard after all the lives they've destroyed with their greed.
