Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Under 40

I noticed the under 40 year old age group are leaving Oxy. Big big big problem. Should not have given them VSP. HR should be calling them back. HR messed this up badly.

Oil & gas jobs are really is not a really career. It is a job until a downturn begins. Once downturn starts these companies all begin with their mass firings. Unfortunately downturns are a constant in this industry. We are all subject to the whims of some sheikh somewhere in the middle east. If you're young get out if you can.

I am "old" and nearing retirement. But if I were under 40 I would do whatever it takes to get out of this industry. Why would you subject yourself to 30 more years of this tortured industry. It has been this way for the past 50 years and it is not going to change. Those younger colleagues who have taken the VSP are smart to leave. I wish them the best. They will be better off.

@1uad+15xknwJ5 well said. Culture is bad. Specifically, you can not trust your managers, they simply playing politics, promoting liars, cheaters and scammers. Look those stars, how many fake technologies being put on JB’s list. A chief commented a project, “this is one of best presentations I ever seen”. What a shame! The presenter simply done such a poor job, insulting people’s intelligence. There are always cheerleaders: “great job!”, such and such. How OXY can have a bright future when Mr. and Miss Liars are dominating in every team?!
OXY truly needs to overhaul its management system. It is not about individual ethics and morals. It’s a bad system that you need to play games when become manager or team lead. This is why people left. It’s stink and disgusting to playing with those shifting around. Poor VH, who can she trust?
Hope som one can finally correct this. Just hope!

Age is really a nothing burger here. Aside from the salary issues (which are huge), people leave jobs bc their manager or their team s—s, and/or that they don’t feel valued. The fact Oxy has no money and more debt than some countries (ha) wouldn’t matter if people are treated well, feel valued and generally feel like they have a future at the organization. I’m in my 40s, and I VSPed out because the culture and dynamics within my team with Oxy leaders were bad, and there was no vision where I was a prime player on a solid and respectful team.

Oxy should assess their leadership - senior and middle - and whether they have who it takes to take that company to the level they feel they can. That’s where the real problem lies.

I know a lot of over 40 that are really good in the industry, so don't be to hard on them. Over 40 is still very young.

LAPC wants to leave but we don’t meet all the hoops and ladders Kayaki and Hawaiian Shirt have placed in front of the CoC and we aren’t eligible for VSP because our assets weren’t included. They’ve done everything they can not to pay. During VH’s very first intro, she boldly claimed all 55 and up would get to take VSP. From that day on she has told one lie after another. Excluding employees, rejecting CoC, rejecting VSP, excluding entire assets and then failing to fulfill promises to both employees and shareholder.

OXY is full of arrogance, ignorance and deceit and it starts with VH.

You guys tried to sell an asset that didn’t even belong to you in the first place and now you have no idea how to run it or backfill the mass exodus of people leaving.

Give me the VSP or CoC and I’ll happily be on my way

Couldn’t have said it better than the comment immediately under this one. The over 40 year olds need to change their way of thinking or soon no one will be left for them to b–ch around.

This isn't about over 40 vs under 40. I believe the post is about under 40 leaving Oxy and are not happy with the environment. The attacks from the obvious over 40 Loxy is proof of the toxic Oxy environment. Another reason why noone under 40 wants to work for Oxy.

The issue is not that 40. The issue is who the 40 crowd. As a result of a profoundly toxic environment, those with mobility and in-demand skills leave the company; a larger number are 40 as they tend to be less settled, not have children etc.

Back in 2016, quality people left in droves, leaving behind those who either couldn't leave or those who weren't worth anything.

This old fart knows a heckuva lot more than these under 40’s, am much more proficient in some G&G applications than they are and am highly self sufficient and a real problem solver. I don’t hide behind ear buds all day long and stay cooped up away from being a team player, am collaborative and not hiding information from peers like some of you do.

@gvh, you're clearly not very smart. No, many of us have not had the chance to take the voluntary separation, because we don't qualify. I submitted a very generous bid to Oxy, much less than my CoC is worth, and I was told that I do not qualify for any voluntary separation, because I am one of the many excluded classes. Trust me, I will be leaving as soon as I find another job, but I'm not going to quit in this environment without a severance package or another job lined up. But I can't wait to leave. Oxy is the biggest dumpster fire I've ever seen in my career.

@giq+15xknwJ5 You had your chance to take the voluntary separation, I wonder why you didn’t want to leave the “dumpster” then. Maybe you didn’t have the balls? Or perhaps your skills isn’t as top notch as you believe or perhaps you may just like it here. If I where you, I will just focus and do my job.

Good. Most of the employees under 40 have NO clue what they are doing. I would rather work with the wise old farts. The younger ones can’t even work their software programs and then blame others when something goes wrong.

I've been in this industry 15 years and I'm not surprised. It is slow to change and stuck in its old ways. All the extreme right wing folks make the situation much worse.

Please go. Oxy will find some other under 40's. If we had so many under 40 stars we would be crushing it. Don't think so highly of yourself.

What you are experiencing now is typical of the many cycles you will experience in your career with any company. If you job is going well you should stick with it and not get discouraged.

Did they really revoke people's vsp? HR called them back or their manager veto?

Under 40, I also plan to leave. This company is a dead end. All you need to see is the leadership, who your managers, vp's, and who the decision makers are. This has been one of my worst professional experience ever.

The culture is toxic. They have started revoking some VSPs that were previously approved. Those people are furious as you can imagine. Lies and not honoring the spirit of the agreement destroyed any remaining trust.

Yes, they messed up. They didn’t let this under 40 go with a nice package. Once the economy picks back up, I’ll probably leave without one, and I doubt I am the only one. Lapc and its been a complete nightmare.

I’m 34 and I work at oxy and the entire culture in a cancer. I stayed, but I saw a lot of my land colleagues under 40 leave and I can’t say I blame them at all.
