Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Some here have frightening predictions

I can't believe that the next round of layoffs could be worse than the ones in April, as some are predicting. Please tell me that this is impossible and that someone is maliciously stirring the pot. I am more anxious than ever because of these rumors.

Don't be frightened. As people suggest, be prepared. Look at the economic situation. The entire country and Europe are gonna get it now.

@OP. It doesn't matter what do you do, or in what company you work for, nobody is indispensable. I have seen companies "shooting themselves in the foot" by letting go talented people just to prop the stock price. Even as a part of a union, there is no guarantee the job is going to be for you forever.

You could be anxious and live always in fear, or you could stop the fear by making sure your skills are updated and that you can find work anytime you need. I knew in 2019 that, sooner or later, I'd lose my job here, when it was evident to me that FMC was following in IBM footsteps. Of course, having paid my mortgage in 2017, and having saved since then "a bunch", it is easier for me to be ready for a layoff.

Don't get me wrong, I am not looking forward for a severance. I'd prefer to have a job at Ford for a couple more of years, before finding another company. However, by being prepared mentally and financially, I avoid getting anxious and keep my stress levels low.

@1tvp+1h3dQepR. Many workplaces can be abusive if you let them. Ford is just one of them. Managers can dictate what I work on and the priorities of the tasks, but cannot dictate my life. As I say to my managers when I need to take time off, or do anything else, "I am informing you, not asking for permission".

It is always good to remind them that they don't have a hold on you. It keeps things in perspective and avoids a lot of troubles in the future with bullies. Of course, it is also true that it is easier for me being a male. For instance, many years ago at a smaller company, in my first week there, I saw one of the owner shouting at one of the employees because of some mistake. I asked if that was a regular occurrence (it was) and I said loudly for the whole office to hear, that the person that would raise the voice at me should better learn to fly first, because I would throw that person, head first, through the nearest window and we were located in the 9th floor. Maybe was just luck, but I never got yelled at, and owners were very courteous with me every time.

There is only so long that they can dangle a sword over you, until you break or leave. I got out before the former. Only after it was clear they deliberately misinform you, if you could be next or not, did I see how abusive it really is.

I heard 1,600 people will be let go in August. I also heard it might happen in July. Wait and see.

@OP Ford layoffs follow a pattern

  • offer involuntaries (check 2021)
  • press “leaks” about having too many or wrong people / expansions in low cost regions (check)
  • small layoff with a few managers to test the process (check)
  • “good” news press releases, for example converting blue collar temp workers to full time/plans to build/expand plants in USA and hire blue collar workers (check)
  • batten down the hatches and secrecy mode (check)
  • large layoff

Suggest you change industries as stress is bad for your health.
The layoff cycles are shortening so you will be anxious all the time in your current job.

The April layoff was tiny compared to other layoffs that have occurred. More will come. Of course, voluntary attrition has been high as well. You can be nervous about getting laid off, or nervous about holding the bag when people in your department leave. Take your pick.

There were only two LL3s' groups impacted in April. The next one will be much more wide spread.

One LL3's area had ~200 out of 1300 let go. Right at 15%. I'd expect the next round to impact many more groups at closer to 20%.. Do they math. If you're anxious be prepared.

I don't think anyone is stirring the pot. Ford needs the cash to build that $30 billion battery plant in Tennessee and the the $3.7 billion to modify their factory to build EVs in Michigan and Ohio. That money has to come from somewhere and they made no secret of the fact that people working on ICE program are no longer needed. I think a 2700 or more cuts over the next year is more likely than not.

Nothing is impossible at the Oval these days. I expect at Least 2700 for the next round. No new programs for platform teams to work on.
