Thread regarding Alphabet Inc. (Google) layoffs

Translation from the Town Hall:

(1) We closed access immediately so that you won't have the chance to rm -f our servers.
(2) From now on, we will only do targeted hiring worldwide, and only if it's related to AI.
(3) Sergey and Larry supported the layoff decision.
(4) Those recently promoted were also cut because they have too high a salary.

That's all, folks!

rm -f is relatively harmless. Do you mean
sudo rm -rf ?

As a long time tech worker(over 20 years), I have come to know some things about Indian culture, workers, and management.

  1. Indian people that are not in a leadership position are extremely polite(probably known to everyone here).
  2. Once an Indian becomes a mid+ manager their demeanor changes drastically to become very harsh. This is part of the power dynamics of their culture.
  3. Indian social status is highly influenced by how many people work for them. This very often leads to head count building for the sake of the headcount itself, not what is needed for the mission/project/department. There are many patronage jobs. While many of my Indian colleagues are very highly skilled, there are others that are just there to take orders.
  4. Indian surnames do not work like American's or European's. Among those patronage jobs there will be blood relatives, or even a spouse(I have personally seen this at Oracle) with a last name that is not even close to that of the manager or VP. This has allowed them to abuse American nepotism laws with impunity.

# 4 begs the question then: Why should I maximize my discretionary performance to go above and beyond expectations to secure a promotion and paint a target in my back? Instead, I'd focus on doing my job, don't rock the boat and use the extra time for myself and my family.

The era of mutual loyalty is long gone. Interesting to see how they will change the narrative again when the wave comes up again...will folks believe the Kool Aid then?

Miscalculating the business is a HUGE f***cked mistake by management, and with that comes real accountability, not just a copy paste "I take responsibility" BS...

This goes as well to Meta, etc... grew too fast too quickly with mediocre management.

The layoff is not personal, not performance related, just cost cutting due to economic condition to focus on profit for shareholders. If the economic condition was better, the layoff would not have happened period

More of an explanation than ex-employees deserve. Google owes you nothing.

There aren’t enough seats on the boats going back.

If you promoted someone, it’s because they outperformed their role. You don’t then expect them to work the new role (promotion) for free. You pay them commensurate to the position. That’s how it works.
Laying off performers ensures mediocrity in the ranks. Enjoy
